  1. Why might people smoke cannabis? • Effects can be immediate and last from an hour to a few hours. • Can make people feel happy and relaxed • Can make people hallucinate and may be used to escape daily pressures

Penalties for possession What do you expect would happen if you were caught with cannabis on you? • Under 18 ? • Police reprimand if it’s the first time • Final warning if second time and referral to Youth Offending Team • Arrest if it’s the third time • If you are under 18 your parent/guardian will be contacted • Over 18 ? • Warning and potential on the spot fine of £80

  3. Penalties for supply • What would you expect to happen if you were found to have a large amount of cannabis in your possession? • Dealing is a serious offence and doesn’t just mean selling – it can include giving drugs to friends • Maximum penalty is 14 years in prison plus an unlimited fine

College Policy • If you are suspected to be under the influence whilst at college you will be immediately suspended and your return will depend on a meeting with a senior member of staff and parents/guardian. • If you are found to be taking drugs or are found with drugs on you at college then your place will be immediately withdrawn

  8. Signs of dependency • Cannabis can be addictive and if people are dependent they will: • Become anxious without the drug • Use larger amounts than before, or use it more often • Try to give up but fail • Lose interest in other activities/areas of their life • Get physical withdrawal symptoms.
