Strengths of Acids and Bases • Strong versus weak acids and bases • The strength of it depends on the number of molecules that break apart when the acid or base is dissolved in water. • Strong: Most of the HCl breaks apart in water HCl  H+ + Cl- • Weak: Only some of the Ca(OH)2 break apart Ca(OH)2  Ca++ + 2(OH-)

  3. Acids, Bases and Neutralization • H+ + OH-  H2O • Acid + Base = Water (Neutral) • Water is formed when the hydrogen ions from the acid react with hydroxide ions from the base.

  4. - bases have a pH above 7, the higher the number the stronger the base - acids have a pH below 7, the lower the number the stronger the acid

  5. pH and the Environment - Living things depend on having a steady pH in their environment. -Rain is usually slightly acidic. Acid rain can be as low as 3 on the pH scale.

  6. Salts • When an acid neutralizes a base, a salt and water are produced. • A salt is an ionic compound formed from the positive ion of a base and the negative ion from an acid. • Salts have many uses including:seasoning foods, preserving foods, making wallboard, baking soda, lye and many more.
