  1. PhytElleTM • A superior formulation to support women’s health. The special combination of plant extracts and herbs offers relief from symptoms associated with PMS, perimenopause and menopause. • In other words – for everything you ever wanted to know about PMS and other women’s stuff but were too afraid to ask…

  2. Back to basics Hormones are: • Chemicals secreted by glands. • They relay signals from cell to cell. • Affect different organs. • Can trigger physical symptoms and alter mood. • The ovaries produce female sex hormones. • For women, the main sex hormones are oestrogen and progesterone.

  3. Hormonal ups and hormonal downs • Are a fact of life for women at every age and every stage. • Can be pre-menstrual i.e. premenstrual syndrome (PMS), peri-menopausal and menopausal.

  4. PMS • Menstrual symptoms and PMS affect most women • Physical (swelling, bloating, headaches) • Behavioural (sleep disturbances, appetite changes, poor concentration) • Emotional (irritability, mood swings, anxiety, depression)

  5. Menopause • Menopause is natural and normal but may be associated with unpleasant symptoms. • From hot flushes, mood swings and insomnia to night sweats and headaches. • Symptoms can last for a decade!

  6. So what can you do? • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) • Lifestyle factors • Plant foods, plants and herbs

  7. Phytoestrogens • Phytoestrogens are literally ‘plant oestrogen’ • There are a number of types of phytoestrogens • In soy, the main phytoestrogens are soy isoflavones • Isoflavones have antioxidant properties

  8. How phytoestrogens work • When consumed, phytoestrogens bind to oestrogen receptors on target tissues. • Phytoestrogens can promote some of the same effects as human oestrogen because they have a similar chemical structure

  9. How phytoestrogens work • When oestrogen levels are high (as in PMS), phytoestrogens compete with naturally produced oestrogen to lower oestrogen production. • When oestrogen levels are low (as in menopause), phytoestrogens bind mimic natural oestrogen so the body thinks there is more circulating oestrogen.

  10. Recommendation Before medical treatments, the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) recommends first considering lifestyle changes, either alone or combined with a non-prescription remedy, such as dietary isoflavones/black cohosh.
