The CIBC Discovery Gallery: History and Goals The Royal Ontario Museum Board Policy (August 2002) Mission: The ROM will be a world leader in communicating its research and collections to increase understanding of the interdependent domains of cultural and natural diversity, their relationships, significance, preservation, and conservation • Relevant Objectives: • To produce nationally and internationally outstanding and innovative programs of agreed research and collections management • To exceed visitor expectations for engagement and a meaningful experience

  4. The CIBC Discovery Gallery: History and Goals History: • Experimental Discovery Room in 1977, enlarged and redesigned in 1983 as the Discovery Gallery. Expanded and reopened once more in March 2007 as the CIBC Discovery Gallery. Goals: • Operated by Education Services, under concept of discovery learning (Muska Mosston (1972) – Guided Discovery, Problem Solving, Individual Program (Student’s Design) • Experiences based on direct access to artifacts and specimens “Discovery” refers to the learning process that is communicated in the displays and utilized by visitors. “Gallery” refers to the public presentation of actual Museum collections and implies an appeal to visitors of all ages…the aim of the gallery is to provide all Museum visitors with the opportunity to participate in discovery learning by means of direct access to artifacts and specimens representing all ROM curatorial departments.” Source: Ruth Freeman. Visitor Studies (to be shown during class discussion/conclusion) “The Gallery should remain responsive to the public; the Gallery should be dynamic, with new material developed on an ongoing basis in response to visitor use and interest.” – Discovery Gallery Development Team, 1979. Two series of studies undertaken in 1984 and 1985. These included: • Visitor Attendance Analysis • Visitor Tracking Study • Visitor Survey Evaluating the CIBC Discovery Gallery • Measures of Success?
