Laws Governing Driver license (pg. 6-7) • Motorists must carry 3 things: • A valid driver or provisional license • Current vehicle registration • Proof of valid liability insurance • A change of Name:must be reported within 2 weeks • Legal change of residence :within the state, reported within 1 week • All applicants for a NJ driver license must provide a full name, current address, Social Security Number, 6 Point ID Verification and other documents.

The New Jersey Driver License System; Digital License (pg.8) • License Cycle – New Jersey issues a 4 year driver license • Digital Driver License – MVC or “Motor Vehicle Commission” uses a “6 Point Identification Verification” • Getting a driver license illegally = $200-$500 fine+30-90 days imprisonment • Altering a diver license or showing an altered license = loss of license, up to a $1,000 fine, and up to 6 months imprisonment • Motorists under 21 are issued a vertical – format license • 2 dozen security features • Restrictions- Corrective lenses (1), Prosthetic devices (2), mechanical devises (3), hearing impaired (4) and attached restrictions (5) may appear on your license in code format. • Stolen Licenses – Report to police, duplicate at MVC for $11

Types of New Jersey Licenses (pg.9-10) • Basic Driver License (class D) – All types of motor vehicles, except motorcycles • Provisional • Commercial Driver License (class A, B, C) – Large trucks, buses and HAZMAT • Motorcycle License (class E) – Separate or an endorsement (M) on the BDL • Provisional • Moped License – Age 15 or older • Agricultural License – Farming purposes only • Boat License – Operation of motorboats

  12. 6 Point Identification Verification (pg.11) • All NJ driver license applicants must complete a “6 Point I. D.” to prove their age, identity, legal presence in the U.S. • Identity is proved through a combination of documents which include: • 1 Primary document • 1 Secondary document • 6 points of ID • Proof of address ** For assistance: www.njmv.gov or call (888) 486-3339

  13. 6 Point ID Verification • On pages 12-15 you will see all of the document possibilities. • In your notes write down all of the documents you have, whether it is a primary or secondary document, its point value, and then total the value up. • Do you have a document from both the primary and secondary category? • Does your total equal 6 or greater? • Use the charts on the following pages to select your documents.

  14. Graduated Driver License (GDL)(pg.16-21) • In 2001 NJ sought to enhance driver preparation and safety by implementing a multi-stage driver licensing system= GDL • The GDL gradually introduces driving for 1st time drivers. • Privileges program

  15. A. The Early Bird Road • Get a Special Learners Permit • Be at least 16 years old • Have signed parent or guardian consent • Be enrolled in a BTW training course (6 hours) • Pass MVC Knowledge and Vision Tests • MVC will validate Special Learners Permit ONLY after BTW is completed

GDL Decal All GDL drivers under age 21, who possess a permit or probationary license, are required to display two visible, red reflective decals, distributed through the MVC on any vehicle that they operate. One decal is to be displayed on the top left corner of the rear license plate and the other on the top left corner of the front license plate. The two, removable, decals are provided to a driver at the time a permit is issued for a fee of $4. Additional decals are available for $4 per pair at any MVC agency. (39:3-13 and 39:3-13.4f)

  43. License Plates • Two plates – one on front bumper, one on the rear bumper • Rear Plate – must be lit at night and visible from 50 feet • License plate holders – fine of up to $200 • Lost or stolen plates: • Report to local police • Replace lost or damaged plates within 24 hours

  44. Inspection • New car – 4 years • Used car – every 2 years • Owners have the option to take the vehicle for inspection within 14 days after registration expires OR accept the time left on the previous owner’s sticker
