  1. MPB Project Meeting: University of Arizona Update Adrian Harpold, Paul Brooks, and Joel Biedermann San Francisco 12/13/10

  2. What we got… • Hydrometric: • ~20 piezometers • ~2 discharge measurements • 6 bulk rainfall collectors • 18 soil pits • Each with 3 soil moisture and temperature sensors (10, 30, 60+cm) • Matric potential at 4 pits (10 and 30 cm) • Deep wells at NWT • Meteorologic: • 20 pyranometers • 20 T/RH sensors • 20 snow depth sensors • 4+ tipping buckets (including throughfall at NWT) • Chemical: • ~200 water chemistry samples • Surface water • Shallow groundwater • Soil solution water • Rain water • Snow water

  3. Future research questions related to physical hydrology (Harpold’s stuff) • What are the subsurface/surface pathways for runoff generation at our sites and how do these pathways change from snowmelt vs. monsoonal driven inputs? • How does vegetation influence runoff processes and water partitioning at the plot to hillslope scale? • Tools/datasets to explore the questions: • Discharge/GW/soil moisture data • EMMA • Residence time estimation • Water isotopes in liquid water, vegetation, and soil (?)

  4. Concerns/Suggestions for next field season • Sampling water isotopes from vegetation and soil (cryo-distilation method) • Sequential rain water isotope sampling • Weaknesses in surface water discharge measurements at CP and NWT • Deep wells at CP • Snow depth sensor adjacent to NCAR gage at CP

  5. Synopsis of CP hydrochemistry data • Routine sampling: • surface water @ 2 locations • shallow GW at 3 locations • rain water • Intensive sampling: • soil water at 10, 30, 60, 90 cm at some plots • additional shallow GW locations

  6. Synopsis of select NWT data • Similar soil moisture/temp and matric potential at plot scale • 6 piezometers • Discharge in channel below hillslope • Routine chemistry sampling: • surface water @ 2 locations • shallow GW at 3 locations • rain water • Intensive chemistry sampling: • soil water at 10, 30, 60 cm at some plots • additional shallow GW locations
