  1. Nearby – a short distance away The shack is nearby the lake.

  2. Colonies- groups of insects of the same kind that live together

  3. tunnels- long holes under the ground

  4. Stalks- the main stems of a plant

  5. Antennae- a pair of long, thin feelers on the head of an insect

  6. Carpenter-a person who builds things from wood

  7. Sawdust - the material that falls from wood when it is cut

  8. Log-a long piece of tree that has been cut

  9. Larvae: the worm-like forms of very young ants or other insects.

  10. Cocoons- coverings of silky thread that larvae live in as they change and grow

  11. Ant cocoons

  12. Parasol- an umbrella used for protection from the sun

  13. Fungus- a large group of plants (like mushrooms or mold) that do not have leaves or flowers

  14. Weaver- a person or insect that laces together strings to make cloth, webs, or cocoons

  18. Aphids- tiny insects that suck juices from plants
