  2. Government monies for ICT in colleges have been allocated to putting in place • Physical resources - JANET network, computers for staff and students • Management structures - ILT strategy, ILT Champions, ILT/E-Learning Standards • National Learning Network (NLN) - materials and support

  3. But what about staff training?Is there sufficient funding? Many colleges use their overall budget to deliver staff training programmes, but QCA accredited qualifications for staff, only funded by the LSC if followed in “twilight hours” Is this affected by government policies for priority funding for basic skills etc?

Barriers to effective implementation of e-learning • Lack of funds for staff training and accreditation • Lack of time for staff to gain confidence in using ILT with learners • Lack of access to the kit by learners • Resistance by some staff and learners • Technical problems and support • Isolation • Knowing when and where to use ILT

  5. The benefits for the learner • Access at any time; any place • Overcomes barriers to learning by traditional means • Learning at own pace • Caters for different learning styles • Multimedia and interaction = interest = motivation

Benefits for Tutors - re-used - adjusted - updated - used for other courses • Bite-size materials can be • Can download materials for each curriculum area • Can cater for large numbers of learners • Can track students, eg through a VLE • Can adopt blended learning but need to be shown how Most importantly frees tutors for higher level activities

  7. “New” Level 3 Certificate in Educational Use of ICT • Revised and updated in line with teachers’ current needs in using ILT • Includes more practical aspects of FPP - modules B, C, D, F, G, H and L • Accredited by QCA, Qualification No 100/2097/4

  8. Initial skills in WP, e-mail, Internet and preferably presentations needed • 30 guided learning hours or blended learning with 16 hours face to face recommended • 3 mandatory units

Unit 1 - Benefits of ICT and use of delivery technologies Involves: • Discussing the way in which teaching and learning in own curriculum area could be enhanced by using ICT • Describing the functions of 3 delivery technologies and analysing how you use or would use them in delivering learning

  10. Unit 2 - Selecting and developing ICT based resources Involves: • Investigating selected websites for information and resources and identifying how you would use 2 of the materials • Producing 3 teaching/learning resources • one incorporating use of 2 types of software • an interactive learning resource • an interactive assessment • Using Word for comments or tracking purposes

Unit 3 - Planning, preparing and applying ICT to teaching and learning Involves: • Identifying a learning session where ICT could be used • Drawing up a detailed session plan which includes use of one delivery technology and 2 resources • Delivering the session • Evaluating and making improvements for future practice • Identifying how ICT can be used in 3 other sessions

  12. Progression • JEB Level 3 Certificate in Delivering Learning Using a VLE (DVLE) • JEB Level 4 Certificate in Transforming Learning with ILT (TILT) • Module Q FPP • Furthering Use of ICT in teaching and supporting learning

Level 3 Certificate in Delivering Learning Using a VLE • Accredited by QCA this February; Qualification number - 100/4879/0 • Confirms that teachers and learning support staff • have planned when and where to use on-line learning • learned how to use on-line learning • have used on-line learning with learners

  15. Unit 1 - Preparing to use on-line learning Involves: • Navigating staff and student pages of a VLE • Analysing the functions, benefits and any problems in using a VLE, with suggestions on how they may be overcome • Planning some on-line learning

Unit 2 - Providing on-line learning Involves: • Showing evidence of use of 3 communication tools • Providing evidence of uploading or arranging upload of • a document, and piece of learning material produced by others • an interactive learning resource • an interactive assessment • Showing how you would monitor learner progress

Unit 3 - Implementing on-line learning Involves: • Showing how 2 learners progress through on-line learning and that their use of communication tools and assessment material has been monitored • Giving feedback on assessment • Assessing how far this piece of on-line learning has added value to learning and making improvements for further practice

  18. Progression • JEB Level 4 Diploma in Transforming Learning with ILT (FPP Strands 1 or 2 and 4) • Module Q FPP • Enhanced use of a VLE

  19. Fees per candidate - EUIT and DVLE Registration - £30 Award claim fee - £30 (Claim fee for a single unit - £15) Moderation Postal/electronic or where a large number of candidates by centre visit

  20. Support • JEB mentoring service • JEB help-line • Consultation visit • Presentations/workshops for centres • Guidance on assessment within the candidate assessment record • CD, website, book references at end of each unit

JEB Level 4 Certificate and Diploma in Transforming Learning with ILT • Based directly on FPP programme and activities • More pedagogically based • For those who want certification for coverage of FPP Strands 1, 2 or 3 and 4 • Certificate of Unit Credit for clusters of modules - A-D (Unit 1) or E-H (unit 2) or I-L and G (Unit 3) or R-V (Unit 4)

  22. For the Certificate Candidates need to complete 2 units Unit 1 - Modules A-D plus Unit 2 - Modules E-H, Z or Unit 3 - Modules I-L, G, Z For the Diploma Candidates need to complete one additional Unit Unit 4 - Modules R, S, T, U, V

  23. Assessments for each module based on FPP activities but some JEB add-ons to assure level 4 ness • Candidates progress through FPP modules for a Unit or for the Certificate or the Diploma, but need to use the assessments in the JEB assessment documentation

  24. Registration and Moderation for all JEB PDQs • Guidance on centre registration from JEB • For candidate registration use form(s) PD6 • Following assessment and internal moderation, for award claims use form PD9 JEB Moderator will then request sample assessments/all independent assessments to be sent electronically or visit the centre • Certification
