  2. A Quick History • The VFL (Victorian Football League) started in 1897 and there were 8 teams. • It changed to AFL (Australian Football League) in 1990. • Now, in 2013, there are 18 teams.

  3. Kicking a football • Kicking a football is the most important skill to know to play good footy. • You should learn how to kick a football when you are young and it is important to learn the right technique (how to kick it properly).

  4. How to hold the football • You hold the ball with your thumbs near the airhole and your middle fingers on the two sides. • You have your little fingers parallel with your thumbs.

  5. How to kick the Football • The first thing you should do is line up your body with your target. Have your head slightly bent over the ball. Hold the ball over the thigh of your kicking leg.

  6. How to kick the Football • Then you should guide the ball down to your foot with one hand.

  7. How to kick the Football • After that you point your toes at your target – watch the ball hit your foot.

  8. How to kick the Football • Finally follow through with your leg straight towards the target.

  9. How can playing footy help you physically, socially and emotionally? • Physically: You get stronger, fitter. • Socially: You can make friends with people on your team and on others. • Emotionally: Football can help you by getting your anger out by kicking the football.
