  2. Object of Rotary • Second Object of Rotary • High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society

  3. What is “Ethical Leadership”? • Definition:Ethical leadership is knowing your core values and having the courage to live them in all parts of your life in service of the common good.

  4. Why Lead? • The ultimate purpose of leadership is to shape a future that is visionary, inclusive, and enables all members of society to fulfill their needs, dreams and potentials

  5. BECOMING AN ETHICAL LEADER • What are my most important values and principles? • Does my calendar –how I spend my time and attention – reflect these values? • What do I want to accomplish with my leadership? • What do I want people to say about my leadership when I am gone?

  6. Will you be the same person at work? At home? In the community? How do your values contribute to the common good? Will you have the courage to live out your values when there is pressure to compromise or rationalize? What would my subordinates & peers say my value are? ASK YOURSELFBelow are some questions to ask on your personal journey toward ethical leadership

  7. Articulate and embody the purpose and values of the organization Focus on organizational success instead of personal ego Find the best people and develop them Create a living conversation about ethics, values and the creation of value. Create mechanisms of dissent Frame Actions in ethical terms – mess up, fess up, fix it. Characteristics of Ethical Leadership

  8. “Gracious Space” • In every organization there is a need for open & honest communication about difficult issues. • How we show up, our intentions and gifts we bring to a relationship, project or process • What is the setting – it can foster or thwart • Inviting the stranger in – be open to diverse and divergent viewpoints • Learning in public – letting go of “knowing” and “being right”

  9. “ I or We” ? • Collective leadership becomes possible when the members of a group, motivated by a common purpose, begin to build relationships with each other that are genuinely respectful enough to allow them to co-construct their shared purpose and work. This is about expanding from solo perspective of “I” to include the “We.”
