  4. BABY BOOMER POPULATION GROWING • 6,592,611 Canadian seniors as of July 2019 • (55-75 years old) • Seniors make up 17.5% of Canadian population • Expected to be 22.7% of Canadian population by 2031 • Over 10,000 Centenarians due to increased life expectancy

CANADIAN OUTLOOK (2019-2028) PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER • 33,900 new job opening (expansion and replacement demand) • Personal and health care needs of an aging population as a strong driver • Increase in life expectancy as a contributor • Hospitals prefer to send patients home (for care) to reduce costs • PSW retirement rate is above the Canadian national average • NOTE: Ontario continues to target funding for home and community-based care. COVID & PSWs PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER • PSWs are the “Front-liners of all Front-liners” • Simple disease that everyone can prevent as long as they know how • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) requirements • Building on standard precautions that are accepted by World Health Organizations for all areas of the medical field

  7. SCOPE OF PRACTICE PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER • Health & Safety • Compassionate Care for Your Client • Being “the Voice” of Your Client • Mental Health Disorders & Ongoing Diseases • Caring for the Dying

  8. HEALTH & SAFETY PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER • Help with mobility • Assist with change of non-sterile dressings (RN or RPN supervision) • Assist in administering medications (RN or RPN supervision) • Observe environments & report/document unsafe conditions

  9. COMPASSIONATE CARE PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER • Feed or assist in feeding • Assist with bathing and other aspects of proper hygiene • Assist in regular exercise, i.e. walking or in pool • Meal preparation & household management • Provide companionship

  10. “VOICE” OF THE CLIENT PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER • Listen for their unique needs • Observe/document physical, mental or emotional changes • Recognizing the signs and symptoms of abuse • Report/document behavioral, physical, and/or cognitive changes • “Advocate” for the client

  11. COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT & CHRONIC DISEASES PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER • Specialized care for dementia and mental health disorders (lesson episodes and use special interaction techniques) • Preventing the spread of infection with communicable diseases • Identify signs and symptoms of disease

  12. CARING FOR THE DYING PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER • Helping Clients be comfortable in palliative care setting (as pain free as possible) • Integrate cultural beliefs and needs of the Client into medical setting • Supporting family through grieving process once Client passes

PREPARING FOR THE REAL WORLD PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER • 15 weeks in a work experience setting (Clinical and Community settings in a Long Term Care Centre) • Supervised by a Certified PSW at the Centre (or RN or RPN) • Regular Anderson College site visits from a RN or RPN • Ongoing “Life line” with your PSW instructor • PSW NACC Skills Passbook verifies competencies and skills
