Measurements Performance and Provisioning • GENI racks and ION/DYNES initiative will enable high bandwidth data flow • Performance of the network can be used to better provision the network • Quality of service metrics and throughput range • perfSONARhooks: LEARN investment is in progress to measure and evaluate performance

  4. Physical Layer Measurements Multi-domain Optical Networks • Most physical layer measurements available through CLI or SNMP polls to the optical equipment • Different vendors with varying naming and access conventions • Access, storage, configuration

Optical Impairments Information Model • IETF – CCAMP working group: e.g., Performance Measurement Metrics of Label Switched Path (LSP) Establishment in Multi-Layer and Multi-Domain Networks (draft-jiyf-ccamp-lsp-00) • ITU-T standards • Embedded (internal) measurements: • Infinera DTN • Ciena Core Director • Etc.

Abstraction of Information Standards and Protocols • perfSONAR: add optical physical layer measurements – GENI IMF project goal • IF-MAP, SNMP, syslog • IF-MAP: integrated approach to access, share, and store in a dynamic fashion • SNMP and syslog: poll, no data unification • Network Description Language (NDL) with a Resource Description Framework (RDF) • Common language towards an ontology for optical networks

Cross-layer Research Better Provisioning with QoS metrics • Measurements from layer 0 up to 4 as parameters for quality metrics • Instantaneous feedback from network links instead of indirect reasoning on low throughput • Transition from optical circuit networking towards optical packet switching
