The Civil War • The civil war was between the South and the North • The north or the Union was against slavery • The southor the Confederates were for slavery • The Civil War began in 1861 • It lasted another 4 years until General Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia • It was and still is America’s bloodiest war.

  3. Rose O’Neil Greenhow • Escape from the British • How did she do it? No one knows • After escape, she continues to work for the union army • Spy for the union army • Rare for women to work for the army • Caught by British • Arrested and threatened by death

  4. Medicine and breakthroughs Breakthroughs medicine The old saying was bite the bullet and was performed during painful medical operations • The submarine was a big breakthrough

  5. Classic literature • Henry Timrod- author; wrote about war • Mark twain- Poet/ author wrote horror and gothic tales • Ex: the adventures of tom sawyer

  6. Music • Along with most classical things in this time period, music also focused mainly on romantic style. • Ex: Battle tune; The Bonnie Blue Flag; Away down south in the land of the traitors. • Music was very important to this time period

  7. Art • Art and music were expressed a lot like each other in this time period, mostly romantic style. • Ex: Frederic Church, Generals art print, and American subjects. • Other types were the landscape and the bull running style.

  8. Food from the 1850’sand 1860’s • Many kinds of foods that are enjoyed today were created during this time period • Ex. Boston cream pie, apple crisp, and even breakfast cereal
