  2. What is a submarine? • A submarine is a watercraft that can operate independently below water, as distinct from a submersible that has only limited underwater capability.

Submarine 1500 • The first useful submarines began in the 19th century • civil war, Confederates built H.L Hunley, that sunk Union ship • submarine called Housatonic built in 1864 • First American submarine is as old as the United States • David Bushnell a Yale graduate designed and built a submarine torpedo boat in 1776 • “The most sensational contribution pf patriot and inventor David Bushnell to the American Revolution War effort was the world’s first functioning Submarine”
