Statistics • The cost of delays is estimated at over 16 billion dollars nationwide. • Closures lead to poor public image, road rage/aggressive driving, secondary accidents, loss of local commerce. • 20 percent of all freeway accidents are caused by previous accidents. • 4 percent of Interstate fatals “Hit a vehicle on the shoulder”

  9. Incident Impact Statistics • A one lane closure reduces capacity by greater than 50% on a freeway. • 4 minutes of congestion results from every minute of blockage at incidents. • Cost for each hour of delay on I-5 can exceed $250,000 per hour to local commerce.
