  19. Ideas • Frontier (“basic”) Research is a key driver to innovation and economicperformance • support investigator-driven frontier research over all areas of research - support projects of individual teams

  20. People • Individual fellowships • Industry-academia partnerships • Outgoing International Fellowships • Incoming International Fellowships

  21. Capacities –Research capacity • Research infrastructures • Research for the benefit of SMEs • Regions of Knowledge • Science in Society • Activities of International Cooperation

  22. Funding schemes (1) Collaborative projects • Trans-national consortia • Innovation, New knowledge and Technology • Size, scope and internal organisation of projects can vary • Small or medium-scale focused research projects/ Large-scale integrating projects

  23. Funding schemes (2) Coordination and support actions • networking, exchanges, trans-national access to research infrastructures, studies, conferences, etc. Individual projects • Basic research via ERC - “Ideas” Training and career development of researchers • “People” grants for researchers

  24. Typical size of consortia

  25. Participating Countries • EU Member States: • 27 member states • Associated Countries: • Switzerland, Israel, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Croatia, FYROM, Serbia, Turkey, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Faroe Islands. • International Cooperation Partner Countries (ICPC) • Practically the rest of the world

  26. Procedure • Publication of a “Call for Proposals” by the European Commission for each priority • Publication of related documents: Work Programme, Guide for Applicants, Submission forms • Submission of proposals (deadline usually 3 months) • Evaluation of proposals by panels of independent experts • Announcement of results – ranking of proposals • Negotiations with the EC – amendment according to evaluation results • Signature of the Grant Agreement • Start of implementation of the project

  27. Maximumfunding rates Research and technological activities: up to 50% of eligible costs except for: • Public bodies: up to 75% • Secondary and higher education establishments: up to 75% • Research organisations (non-profit): up to 75% • SMEs: up to 75%

  28. The evaluation criteria • Divided into three main criteria: • S&T Quality (relevant to the topic of the call) • Concept, objective, work-plan • Implementation • Individual participants and consortium as a whole • Allocation of resources • Impact • Contribution to expected impacts listed in work programme • Plans for dissemination/exploitation • Criteria generally marked out of 5 • Individual threshold = 3/5; overall threshold = 10/15 • Can vary from call-to-call
