  2. Japanese Resource Re-Use Plan日本資料再利用計画 • Comprises distribution of duplicate books in JANUL libraries among North American libraries • 9/1/2006: The proposal was presented by Mr. Ikuo Sasakawa on behalf of JANUL to NCC • 9/23/2006: NCC discussed the proposal and suggested more coordination • 1/13/2007: NCC endorsed a feasibility study using the duplicates of Univ. of Tokyo Library NCC Open Meeting 2007

  3. Feasibility Study • Participants: • University of Tokyo Library: Provides books and the list • Japan Publications Trading Co., Ltd.: Assists in shipping and handling • North American libraries: Select books they want and submit the list to NCC • NCC (Tokiko Bazzell and Toshie Marra): Recommends recipient library for each book to the University of Tokyo Library NCC Open Meeting 2007

  4. Feasibility Study (cont.) • Purpose: • To see whether there are sufficient demands among the North American libraries for receiving duplicate books from Japan • To determine whether the proposed plan is workable—e.g., efficiency and cost-effectiveness • Costs to recipient libraries: • Shipping charges incurred in Japan and from Japan to your institution plus handling charges (¥3,000 per carton) NCC Open Meeting 2007

  5. Feasibility Study (cont.) • NCC’s Roles: • Communication with University of Tokyo Library and with libraries in North America • Selection of recipient library in cases where multiple libraries request the same book • Selection criteria: collection size and geographic location • Report on the results of the Feasibility Study—JANUL will have the next board meeting in May, where future plan will be decided NCC Open Meeting 2007

  6. NCC Open Meeting 2007

  8. Recipient Library Selection Process • Sort items in three categories: 1) Items requested by a single library 2) Items requested by multiple libraries 3) Items not requested by any library • Determine the priority order among the nine libraries by examining the size of Japanese language collection and geographical location of each library. NCC Open Meeting 2007

  11. Selection process: 3. Adjustment (cont.) NCC Open Meeting 2007

  12. Selection Process (cont.) 4. Distributed non-duplicated items selected by Ohio State and the University of Kansas respectively. Ohio State (Midwest) 63 titles Kansas (Midwest) 6 titles • Each library was presented the final list and asked to confirm its willingness to receive the items in the Study. NCC Open Meeting 2007

  13. Preliminary Analysis • 74% of the materials will be re-used • A need for this type of project • The total time used: 8 hours • A relatively small number of items and participating institutions: 900 available items and 11 participants NCC Open Meeting 2007

  14. Preliminary Analysis (cont.) • One institution expressed a disappointment: More challenges might arise with a larger pool of books & participants. • Institutions like UCLA (131 non-duplicated items) and Ohio State (63 non-duplicated items) which selected unique items, had a higher success rate in receiving requested items. NCC Open Meeting 2007

  15. Pending Issues: cost effective? • Will 6 items be cost effective to Kansas? The question remains whether it will be cost effective to pay shipping and handling for a small number of items. NCC Open Meeting 2007
