  1. Cause and Effect Cause is why something happened. Effectis theresult of what happened. Because effects always have causes and causes always lead to effects, we rarely see one without the other. Picnic Canceled!

  2. Cause • The cause is the first thing that happens. • It makes the second thing (the effect) happen. • The part of the sentence after the word becauseis the cause. • Example: • I stayed home from school • because I had the flu.

  3. Effect • The effect is the second thing that happens. • The effect answers the questions: What happened? What was the result? • Example: • Jaime was going too fast and fell off his bicycle. What happened because Jaime was going too fast?

  4. Reading Comprehension • Read the entire story! • Use the reading strategies: • Previewing the Text • Interpret and Understand • Make a Prediction • Chunk the Text • Visualize the Text • Determine the Essential Message

  5. “The Lady, or the Tiger?” • Princess must decide the fate of a young man. • King’s justice system: • Tiger behind one door = guilty • Lady behind another door = innocent • Servant falls in love with the princess • King will get rid of him either way • Presents a question to think about: • The lady? Or the tiger?

  7. Fahrenheit 451 • Guy is a fireman. • Parlor walls = surround television, interactable • Fireman informed by the public as to who has hidden books. • Guy questions his job because of Clarisse. • Guy plans to hide books in firemen’s home with Faber.

  8. Fahrenheit 451 • Guy hides books; Mildred informs the firemen. • Guy kills Beatty and flees • Mechanical Hound chases; identifies another man as Guy  firemen need to look good • Guy finds the intellectuals (hobos); they preserve books by memorizing them. • The city is destroyed in the war.

To Kill a Mockingbird • Mr. Ewell says he witnessed the assault • Tom couldn’t have committed the crime because his left hand/arm were injured in an accident • Tom says Mayella’s father got mad and beat her because she tried to kiss Tom • Atticus says all men are equal in court • Scout knows jury convicted Tom because they wouldn’t look at him
