Introducing ILRT (estd.1996) • Part of University of Bristol’s Information Services division • Mainly externally funded for projects, national services and consultancy • Combines expertise in: • Digital libraries, digital images, eLearning, Internet design and development, usability, accessibility and next-generation Web • Investor in People since 1999

  4. The people • 70+ staff: technical and other researchers • All but a handful on fixed-term contracts (usually 12-24 months) • Constant level of turnover with c.15-20 new staff per annum • Considerable emphasis on staff development

  5. OSIP – the story so far • HESDA Small Development Project Funding • Web based induction programme • Contract Research staff – possibly overseas? • Supplement not replace face-to-face induction • To be used in the period between appointment and actually starting work • Ongoing source of reference

  6. OSIP – design parameters • No technical set-up • Easy to use • Meet accessibility requirements • Transferable • Within University of Bristol • To Exeter • Other Universities?

  7. Our first OSIP • Prototype – “proof of concept” • Not tested with new staff
