Mini-Micro Valve Case Study
This case study explores the design and performance of microvalves similar to the BW valve, focusing on key parameters such as size, flow, power requirements, and temperature range. By investigating existing microvalve technologies and employing micromill fabrication for comparative analysis, this study aims to inform future designs. Key findings reveal various microvalves already developed for similar processes, offering insights into assembly challenges and interfacing elements. The study emphasizes a learning approach through trial and error, guiding future innovations in microvalve design.

Mini-Micro Valve Case Study Group Brainstorm 3/20/09
Learn/Fail Fast Use findings to guide future designs Investigate/fab valves similar to BW valve in: -Valve size/mass -Flow parameters -Power requirements -Temperature range Purpose
Findings • There are numerous microvalves that have already been developed for other fabrication/manufacturing processes with similar design requirements to BW valve • Many of these may be fabricated with micromill for performance comparison and for learning purposes
Example Ball Valve Source: C Fu, Z Rummler and WSchomburg. Magnetically driven micro ball valves fabricated by multilayer adhesive film bonding. JOURNAL OF MICROMECHANICS AND MICROENGINEERING. 24 April 2003.
Conclusions • Case study will develop more informed understanding of: • Overall design/Performance • Part assembly (pin alignment, adhesives, etc) • Interfacing elements • There are other valves to investigate
