  1. Grade 9 Chemistry – Week 2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Octadecanoic_acid_(stearic).png

  2. Today’s Lesson • Set Up Stearic Acid Experiment • Melting & Boiling Point • Separating Solids from Mixtures

  3. Stearic Acid Experiment • Take 4 spatulas of stearic acid. • Melt in a hot water bath. • Record temperature every 122 seconds. • Graph your results.

  4. Melting & Boiling Point • All elements have a melting and boiling point. • The boiling point is temperature at which a substance boils (turns from liquid to gas) • The melting point is the temperature at which a solid substance melts (turns from solid to liquid). • Gas to liquid is called condensation. • Liquid to solid is called solidification.

  5. Separating Solids from Mixtures • There are different ways to remove a solid from a liquid. These ways include: • Filtration • Centrifuging • Evaporating the Solvent • Crystallization • Dissolving (if there is two solids and one can be dissolved.

  6. Work • Answer Q 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 on P256/257. • Complete this while the experiment is completing. • Next lesson, we will be completing some experiments (if I can get them ready in time). • Homework: Chemistry 3rd Edition - Read 'Solids, Liquids & Gases' P228/229 and answer Q1, 2 & 3. Due tomorrow.
