  3. Benefits of the Squat • Improved athleticism • GOOD SQUATS can lead to hip, knee and back health later in life • Develops good hip extension which is necessary in life and as an athlete • Triggers a very strong neuroendocrine response • Leads to muscle growth and increases in strength

  4. Risks • Good squats are great for you but bad squats can lead to injury! • Lack of technique can lead to: • Lower back pain or injury • Hip pain or injury • Knee pain or injury • TRY TO AVOID THIS! • (Video courtesy of Videorapture.com)

Assignment • Create a group of 4 students • Pick a movement from this list: Front Squat, Overhead Squat, Bench Press, Deadlift, Sumo Deadlift, Snatch, Clean and Jerk, Strict Press (Military Press), Push Press, Push Jerk, or Split Jerk • Find 3-5 reputable sources online or in print and HAVE A LIST READY FOR APPROVAL BY END OF CLASS TOMORROW • Podcast will be due 2 weeks from today and should be 10-15 minutes long • Each group member must talk and be involved in the podcast • No music necessary, just talking • Create a concept map, PowerPoint presentation and an accompanying podcast explaining the PowerPoint presentation. Your podcast and slides must include and cover: • What is the movement? • Benefits • Risks • Technique involved in order to execute the movement safely
