  1. As Paul Wrote This Letter • He was facing death • 2 Tim 2:11-13 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: • 12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: • 13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

  2. The Book of 2 Timothy was written in prison just before Paul's execution by Nero. He knew that such a death might also befall his son in the faith, Timothy, as well as any other faithful servant of Christ.

  3. His Concern Was For The GospelNot For His Own Life • 2 Tim 2:8-10 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: 9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. • 10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

  7. Suffering Is Required • Paul did not preach a gospel of health and prosperity • John 15:20-21 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. • 21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me. • Speaking of Saul of Tarsus • Acts 9:16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake.

  8. Paul’s Gospel Was One of Suffering • 2 Tim 4:5-6 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. • 6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. • Paul commands Timothy to “Endure Afflictions”

Our Reward Will BeCommensurate With • Our willingness to sacrifice for him • Matt 16:24-25 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. • 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

Jesus taught this truth in … • The parable of the laborers • Matt 20:1-2 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. • 2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

  12. Matt 20:3-6 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. 5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? • 9-11 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. 10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. 11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house.

Matt 20:12-16 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. 13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? 14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. • 15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? • 16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

What I Should Be DoingAt The Lord’s Return • Matt 24:45-47 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? • 46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. • 47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.

What I Should Be DoingAt The Lord’s Return • Luke 12:36-38 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. 37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. • 38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

We Have Great Confidence • Heb 10:35-39 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. 36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. 37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. • 38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. 39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

  17. We Have Great Confidence • 1 John 3:21-22 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. • 22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

  18. We Have Great Confidence • 1 John 2:28-29 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. • 29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him
