  1. Quantum Technology SIG and Funding Opportunities Dr. Matt Butchers Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge – 7th August 2014

  2. Introducing the KTN The UK’s Innovation Network What we do The KTN is the UK’s innovation network. We bring together businesses, entrepreneurs, academics and funders to develop new products and services. We help business to grow the economy and improve people’s lives by capturing maximum value from innovative ideas, scientific research and creativity

  3. The Knowledge Transfer Network Enabling collaboration Commercial Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurial Strategic Connecting people who wouldn’t usually meet to solve innovation challenges Bringing together businesses and researchers from different sectors Linking people with new ideas and technologies to partners and customers Introducing innovators to public and private funders and investors

  4. The Knowledge Transfer Network Renew We are eliminating silos to make it easier to assemble multi-disciplinary teams so that we can do more, and do it well. Core thematic networks covering key application areas and underpinning technologies 17 Industry Communities Stimulating dialogue/accelerating innovation Interdisciplinary programmes building communities around priority challenges 17 Cross-sector Groups An engaged online community of innovators served by a single platform 60,000+ Members Hundreds of events bringing people together ‘to make magic happen’ 6,000+ Delegates per year Chris Warkup CEO The “half-life of knowledge” is shortening, so we must connect business with research faster than ever before. David Lockwood Chair

  5. UK Quantum Technologies Initiative This funding will allow us to work with the research base and companies from several areas to evaluate and develop the potential of quantum technologies – Iain Gray, Chief Executive, Technology Strategy Board We will be working with partners such as the Technology Strategy Board to identify best use of these funds, and details of how this investment will be allocated will follow in 2014 – Prof David Delpy, Chief Executive, EPSRC The government is to invest £ 270 m over five years in the development of quantum technologies, including £ 32 m through the Technology Strategy Board The Technology Strategy Board will work with the EPSRC to encourage UK companies to evaluate and develop innovative uses of quantum technology, to gain an early competitive advantage in the global race to exploit this innovative technology area.

  6. Quantum Technology SIGconnect.innovateuk.org/web/quantum-technology SIG Objective Unite communities to exploit the commercial opportunities for quantum technologies Communications Defence systems Space Mining Medical physics

  7. Quantum Technology SIGconnect.innovateuk.org/web/quantum-technology SIG Objective Explore market opportunities and help build vital supply chains for a thriving future industry The SIG recognises that it needs to engage with end-users from a broad range of sectors to establish true market opportunities and market needs.

  8. Quantum Technology SIGconnect.innovateuk.org/web/quantum-technology SIG Activities

  9. Technology Strategy Board - Funding Call Exploring the commercial applications of quantum technologies The Technology Strategy Board, EPSRC and Dstl are launching a £ 5 m competition to open in September 2014 which will provide funding to explore and accelerate commercial opportunities in quantum technologies. It will help companies to conduct studies, make early-stage prototypes and test components at reduced cost. These early-stage activities will be crucial tools in driving expectations and mapping the potential value of new markets. Overview

  10. Technology Strategy Board - Funding Call Exploring the commercial applications of quantum technologies Development of technologies with exploit one or more of the following quantum phenomena: Entanglement Superposition Bose-Einstein condensates Matter wave interferometry Squeezed states Critical sub-systems Vacuum systems Stabilised-frequency laser systems Integrated laser and vacuum systems Interpretation algorithms and software Single photon light sources / detectors Optical clocks

  11. Technology Strategy Board - Funding Call Exploring the commercial applications of quantum technologies Exploring the technical or commercial potential for ‘far from market’ quantum technologies or components Undertaking early-stage development activities to understand and support potential application area for quantum systems or components Producing technology prototypes based on laboratory equipment, to demonstrate proof of concept. £ 3m • Attracting 65 % (75 % for SMEs) public funding • Range from £ 50 k - £ 250 k • Range from three – 12 months

  12. Technology Strategy Board - Funding Call Exploring the commercial applications of quantum technologies Look for projects that undertake industrial research, ideally leading to prototypes £ 2m • Attracting 50 %(60 % for SMEs) public funding • Range from £ 250 k - £ 500 k • Range from three – 12 months
