  5. My views (and practice) • I see myself (and my team) as tool maker • I perceive Academics too focused on technicalities • I see Academia sometimes too slow • I see Universities too apart from industry • Maybe that Computer Science could use a little more of adaptive computation UIST, Ohrid-Macedonia, 09/05/14 * Prof. Fernando Buarque, PhD * “Some perspectives in Computing and in Computational Intelligence”

  6. CIRG@UPE Recife • Computationalintelligenceresearchgroup • 5 Professors • 14 M.Sc. students • 17 B.Sc. students UIST, Ohrid-Macedonia, 09/05/14 * Prof. Fernando Buarque, PhD * “Some perspectives in Computing and in Computational Intelligence”

  7. Essential Technological FUTURE areas (in my opinion) Health Energy ICT (Integral) (Renewable) (Inclusive) I.e. human aspects (that may promote happiness !) UIST, Ohrid-Macedonia, 09/05/14 * Prof. Fernando Buarque, PhD * “Some perspectives in Computing and in Computational Intelligence”

  8. Suggestion-1 Target individuals! INDIVIDUALIZATION For sure lack of Humanizing ICT is a gap WE can help solving! News Communication GPS-ingpeople Logistics/MobilityWeb-services Education Internet-banking Leisure Health Energy UIST, Ohrid-Macedonia, 09/05/14 * Prof. Fernando Buarque, PhD * “Some perspectives in Computing and in Computational Intelligence”

  9. Suggestion-2 Target your habitat! HABITAT Waste Collect. Urban Plan Potable water For sure lack of ICT in infra-structure is a gap WE can help solving! Air pollution Housing Sewage Water pollution Mobility Drainage Public Health Energy & Telecomm. Security UIST, Ohrid-Macedonia, 09/05/14 * Prof. Fernando Buarque, PhD * “Some perspectives in Computing and in Computational Intelligence”

  10. Suggestion-3 Target everEducation! EDUCATION Big problem! For sure Education is key for a bright future! UIST, Ohrid-Macedonia, 09/05/14 * Prof. Fernando Buarque, PhD * “Some perspectives in Computing and in Computational Intelligence”

  11. Summary of my talk to the students • Initial question for this talk: “What ‘market’ should we target as conscious tool-makers?” • My answer to it: Always target (1) Educationand (2) ProtectionoftheEnvironment. UIST, Ohrid-Macedonia, 09/05/14 * Prof. Fernando Buarque, PhD * “Some perspectives in Computing and in Computational Intelligence”

  12. FSS Algorithm UIST, Ohrid-Macedonia, 09/05/14 * Prof. Fernando Buarque, PhD * “FSS (FishSchoolSearch) Intell. Algorithmfor Optimization”

  13. FSS FLAVOURS • Uni-Modal optimization (UMO) UIST, Ohrid-Macedonia, 09/05/14 * Prof. Fernando Buarque, PhD * “Some perspectives in Computing and in Computational Intelligence”

  14. Is capable to auto-regulate the granularity of search, but do not tackle MM or MO FSS “Vanilla” • Single-objective optimization (SOO-UMO) • Dynamic Environment UIST, Ohrid-Macedonia, 09/05/14 * Prof. Fernando Buarque, PhD * “Some perspectives in Computing and in Computational Intelligence”

  19. Problem Solving (now) Why not devising an ontology for problems of the world !? Gee, the world sometimes is rather difficult to understand ! What about either -Solvable (trivial) or -ill-posed ? …and why bother with ill-posed ones !? Unfortunately, it is not that uncommon for one to try fitting the world to ones theories! UIST, Ohrid-Macedonia, 09/05/14 * Prof. Fernando Buarque, PhD * “Some perspectives in Computing and in Computational Intelligence”

  20. E.g. Inverse Problems (as a goal) UIST, Ohrid-Macedonia, 09/05/14 * Prof. Fernando Buarque, PhD * “Some perspectives in Computing and in Computational Intelligence”

  22. E.g. a cybernetic solution “For forecasting” (Humans are inside the cybernetic loop) “For capitalizing” (Humans are likely outside the cybernetic loop) “For understanding” (It is likely not to be a cybernetic loop) Simulating Controlling Modeling “For improved capitalization” (Humans are very likely to be again inside of the n-order cybernetic loops) UIST, Ohrid-Macedonia, 09/05/14 * Prof. Fernando Buarque, PhD * “Some perspectives in Computing and in Computational Intelligence”
