  1. Welcome to a Simulation Workshop for Physics Teachers

  2. SPONSORS Special Note: This program was suggested by Hank Okrowski (National Center for Simulation - NCS )with the help of Dr. Donna Poniatowski (Seminole County Public Schools)

  3. Special Thanks to our hosts at I/ITSEC

  4. Behind it all ….Vicki Morelli

  5. Tomorrow Greetings

  6. The Florida High Tech Corridor

  7. Charter Attract, Retain and Grow High Tech Industry throughout the corridor.

  8. Structure MORE INFORMATION: www.floridahightech.com

  9. Charter • Work with all levels of education to provide high tech career information to teachers • Use teachers to leverage this information into the classroom • Develop techCAMP workshops to deliver this information for each of our sectors • Develop Programs to support enhancement of math and science in the school systems.

  10. What is a typicaltechCAMP? • One or Two day workshop for math and science teachers in Middle and High Schools as well as guidance personnel. • Industrial and Academic speakers explaining various aspects of the focus sector • Visits to companies that are active in the focus sector.

  11. BUT – This program is different • It is specifically aimed at PHYSICS TEACHERS • It includes free software (Crocodile Clips) • It focuses on the Modeling Simulation and Training (MS&T) sector

  12. What is MS&T? COMPUTER SCIENCE DIGITAL MEDIA ENGINEERING

  13. SIMULATION • Computer Games • Entertainment • Training • Physical Modeling • Education

  14. Computer Games

  15. Entertainment

  16. Trainer

  17. Physical Modeling

  18. Purdue Study "What we do is simulate the physics of phenomena and then we visualize what we have calculated from scientific principles as a plausible explanation of what really happened. We hope that through such simulations we can learn from this tragic event how to protect better the lives of our citizens and the civil infrastructure of the nation." Christoph M. Hoffmann MORE LATER !

  19. Education - SIMULATION Toy Monkey Paint Ball Arrow

  20. Overall Agenda History & Overview of Simulation – Hank Okraski, National Center for Simulation (NCS) 9-11 Simulation – Dr. Chris Hoffmann, Purdue University Simulation in the Military – Dr. Neal Finkelstein, RDECOM Virtual & Augmented Reality – Eileen Smith, UCF Institute for Simulation and Training (IST) Florida Sunshine State Standards–Dr. Donna Poniatowski/Seminole County Public Schools Activities for the Classroom – Eileen Smith, UCF IST Croc Clips - Integrated Software for Classroom Use – MS&T Team Survey Review – Dr. Brian Goldiez, UCF IST Croc Clips Activities

  21. More Agenda Mathematical Sketching – Joe LaViola - UCF Croc Clips Redux MS&T Video & The Simulation Program 2+2+2 – Steve Burley, Daytona Beach C.C. I/ITSEC Tours

  22. Crocodile Clips

  23. Caveats • We have NO COMMERCIAL interest in this software. • If you like it, you can obtain site licenses from the manufacturer. • There are many sources of applets on the web … search “physics applets” and you will find many, mostly free, examples to use.

  24. Another Source Do you speak JAVA and FLASH???

  25. AND … Includes Disk

  26. More Caveats • This software is designed for students to explore the simulations for themselves. • You will be looking at it for use in your classroom presentations. • Your students will gain from “hands on” use of the software. • But use in the classroom is also helpful in getting some physics concepts across. • Use some of the sites referenced in the accompanying materials in your workshop booklet

  27. This doesn’t work …

  28. What do you see?

  29. Learning

  30. In other words • Simulations in class • Simulations on-line • Textbook Reading • Physical experiments • Problem Solving • Lectures • Working with peers • = Learning!

  31. But keep in mind that … Simulations should NOT replace hands-on experiments

  32. Some Logistics …. • Please have your laptop available for our staff. • Display your color code. • The staff will take your laptop to the side of the room and load the software. • The laptop will then be returned to you. • By the time we get past lunch, all laptops should be ready for the afternoon session!

  33. Let the games begin ...
