“Il faut” means It is necessary

“Il ne faut pas” means You should not

-Il faut manger (You should eat or It is necessary to eat)

-Il ne faut pas parler en class (You shouldn’t eat in class)

“Il faut” gets followed by an infinitive.

Do not conjugate the verb after “faut”

  • Je préfèresortir.
  • (conjugate the 1st verb – leave the 2nd alone)

(put ne before the verb and personne after it)

ne …rien = nothing

Elle ne mange rien = She is eating nothing.

(put ne before the verb and rien after it)

ne plus no more
ne …plus = no more

Je ne danse plus. = I don’t dance anymore.

(put ne before the verb and plus after it)
