Industryleadershaveechoedtheneedtoincorporatetraining, modelling,andstrongergovernmentregulationstohelpachieve net-zerocarbonemissionsby2050.Theirstrongadvocacyalso supportsorganizationsliketheInternationalCivilAviation Organization(ICAO)andtheInternationalAirTransportAssociation (IATA),whichareplayingkeyrolesinsettinggoalsandpromoting sustainablepractices. GreenerAirports Indiahasalreadydemonstratedleadershipthrough CochinInternationalAirport(CIAL)inKerala,which becametheworld’sfirstfullysolar-poweredairportin 2015.Theairportrunsona12MWsolarpowerplant withmorethan46,000panels,generatingcloseto 250millionunitsofelectricityandpreventingover 160,000metrictonnesofcarbondioxideemissions. Inspiredbythissuccess,manyairportsacrossthe countryhaveadoptedsolarpower.Upcoming projectssuchasNaviMumbaiInternationalAirport arealsobeingdesignedwithsustainabilityinfocus. Transitioningbothexistingandnewairportsinto carbon-neutralfacilitieswillbekeytomeetingthe sector’senvironmentalgoals.
Fuel-EfficientAircraft India’stopairlineshaveplacedlargeaircraftorderswithaclearfocusonfuelefficiency.AirIndia,forexample,has ordered250aircraftfromAirbus,including210A320sand40A350s.IndiGo’spurchaseincludes30A350saswell.The A350familyisconsideredamongthemostfuel-efficientwide-bodyaircraftintheworld. AirlinesarealsoacquiringBoeing787Dreamliners,whichareknownfortheirefficientenginesandaerodynamic design.Asfleetsgrow,airlinesneedtoprioritiseaircraftthatuselessfuel,whetherforshort-haulorlong-haulroutes. GreenFinancing AddasubheadingIndiaisexpectedtobecomeoneofthe largestcivilaviationmarkets,withover2,200aircraftsetto joinitsfleetinthenext20years.TheCivilAviationMinistry projectsthatby2030,Indiawillhandle630millionpassengers annually,withgrowthcontinuingatacompoundrateofsixto eightpercent. Tosupport thisgrowthresponsibly,aviationplayersare exploringsustainability-linkedfinancing.Thistypeoffunding tiesfinancialtermstoenvironmentaltargets,encouraging climate-aligneddecision-making.Whileaviationhas traditionallystruggledtoattractgreeninvestment,this is startingtochange.Moreinvestorsarenowrecognising the roleofsustainablefinanceinreshapingthefutureofflight.
SustainableAviationFuel(SAF) Reducingaviationemissionsremainschallenging,butsustainableaviationfuelisemergingasapracticalsolution.A Deloittereporttitled‘GreenWings:India’sSAFRevolutionintheMaking’highlightsthatIndiaaccountsfor2.5percentof globalAviationTurbineFuel(ATF)demand.WithitsabundantfeedstockandalargeshareofATFexports,Indiaiswell- positionedtorampupSAFproduction. However,thisopportunityrequiresacoordinatedeffort.Policymakersandindustrystakeholdersmustcometogetherto establishaclearregulatoryroadmap,developsecuresupply chains,offerfinancialincentivesandcreatemechanismsfor transparentpricingandcertification.ThesestepscanattractinvestmentandscaleupSAFadoption.
