  2. What does ‘gender’ mean? • What are the differences between a man and a woman? • What is the effect of gender inequality?

  3. POWER • Control over another person. • Force or strength. • Ability to get things done. • Power can be abused. • Unequal power relations.

  5. POWER RELATIONS • Sharing of power. • Men used to have power over women in the workplace and home. • Now society tries to promote equal power relations.

  6. Dominance: more power and control over someone. • Submissive: the person with less dominance. • Men have more power because they are physically stronger. • Our laws protect women against abuse.

  7. Unequal power relationship • Money, violence, emotional abuse & sexual intimacy used to control the other person.

  8. Equal power relationship • No person has power over the other.

  9. Masculinity

  10. Refers to maleness or male sex. • Typical male behaviour. • Being manly. • Social customs encourage men to control women.

  11. Femininity

  12. Being female. • The female sex. • Typical women behaviour. • Customs suitable for women and girls. • May lead to submissive behaviour.

  13. Gender • Role in society that you are expected to play depending on whether you are male or female.

  14. Gender roles are given according to historical, political, economic and cultural norms. • Opportunities and restrictions linked to gender. • Women and men have different biological qualities, power, status, expectations, norms, roles and responsibilities.

  16. Stereotypical views of gender roles and responsibilities • Women may earn less than men for similar work • Men are promoted to positions of power instead of women • In some societies men are allowed to smoke and drink, women aren’t • Men are allowed many partners, women only one

  17. Male sports teams get more funding, media coverage and pay than female sport teams • In some societies men are only allowed to drive cars • Females aren’t allowed to go out in public without a male escort • Women must do more housework then men • Women play a large role in parenting

  18. In some societies the widow doesn’t inherit her husbands money, it goes to her in-laws • Some jobs are seen as just men’s jobs – pilots, engineers, mechanics, army • Women’s jobs – nurses, social workers, librarians, make-up artist

  20. Task • Write a short paragraph to explain what you learned about being a male or a female. (5)
