  2. A Brief History The English were the first to start competitive swimming. By 1837, regular swimming competitions were held in London’s six artificial pool, organized by the National Swimming Society of England. The amateur swimming association of Great Britain was organized in 1860 which had 300 swim clubs. In 1896 swimming became an Olympic sport for men’s 100 and 1500 meter freestyle.

  3. Step One Get changed into a swim suit and it also doesn’t hurt to have a pair of goggles as well.

  4. Step Two Stand behind the block until your coach tells you to get up on the block.

  5. Step Three Get up on the block and stand on the very edge of the block.

  6. Step Four Put your feet on the edge closest to the water and wrap your toes around it.

  7. Step Five Bend over and wait for your coach to start you.

  8. Step Six Once your coach tells your to take your mark you grab the edge of the block with your hands in the middle or on either side of your feet.

  9. Step Seven Once your coach says go you spring off with your legs towards the water.

  10. Step Eight When your are in the air jumping into the water, put your hands above your head and squeeze with your arms to form a streamline position.

  11. Step Nine Once you enter the water maintain your stream-line position and if you are doing freestyle you do two fly kicks and finish with flutter kick, if your are doing fly, then you do fly kick.

  12. Step Nine Continued If you are doing breaststroke you do a pull out. And when you are doing backstroke that is a completely different start.
