  2. The Junk Drawer Kingdom • All protists areEukaryotes: organisms that have cells with a nucleus • Protists vary widely… • Some unicellular, some multicellular • Some heterotrophic, some autotrophic • Some mobile, some immobile • Divided into 3 categories.

  3. Animal-like • Known as Protozoans • Protozoan are heterotrophs (cannot make own food) • Able to move freely • Are unicellular • Are 4 different types.

  4. Protozoans: Types I & II Sarcodines Ciliates Have organelles called Cilia, hair-like structures that move like a wave Used to move, obtain food, and sense like whiskers. • Have bulges of the cell membrane that fill with cytoplasm called Pseudopods(false foot) • Use this ‘foot’ for movement • Also use it to trap food.

  5. Protozoans: Types III & IV Zooflagellates Sporozoans Are parasites Move in a variety of ways On their own(flagella / slime) Or depend on host Can feed off multiple hosts, like Plasmodium Humans and Mosquitoes spread malaria (fever & chills). • Posses flagella, used for locomotion • Live inside other organisms • When both organisms benefit from a relationship, it is a type of symbiosis called Mutualism

  6. Fungus-like Protists Heterotrophs Have cell walls Reproduce using Spores: tiny cell that grows into a new organism Able to move at some point.

  7. Water Molds Look fuzzy or threadlike Downy Mildews

  8. Fungus Among Us • Slime Molds live in moist soil or decaying plants & trees • Often brightly colored • Move using pseudopods • Feed on other bacteria

  9. Plantlike Protists • Called Algae • All are autotrophs • Can live in groups of several thousand called Colonies • Differentiated by color of chemicals or Pigment.
