  1. ACADEMIC COLLABORATION ON VACUUM SCIENCE JOHN COLLIGON SURFACE COATINGS AND CHARACTERISATION GROUP DALTON RESEARCH INSTITUTE MANCHESTER METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY J.COLLIGON@MMU.AC.UK

  2. I ACKNOWLEDGE SUPPORT OF RON REID JOE HERBERT OLEG MALYSHEV KEITH MIDDLEMAN REZA VALIZADEH ADRIAN HANNAH SUNIL PATEL VLAD VISHNYAKOV MIKE POOLE and MANY OTHERS

  3. ASTeC has an excellent track record in vacuum science and is well-known world-wide. The Vacuum Science laboratory is an ideal centre for fundamental studies of vacuum-related topics including materials and thin film coatings It also provides an excellent training base for placement students from Liverpool (Piotr Czekala), Loughborough (Adam Smith and Christian Naran) and Bath (Rebecca Jones) Also PhD and visiting students (Narong) With UK research funding now so limited one wonders if Daresbury could become a centre for PhD training?

  4. THE FIRST STEP IS TO MATCH STFC AND ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS AND EXPERTISE IN MY OWN INTERACTION THIS WENT ROUGHLY AS FOLLOWS

  5. JSC BACKGROUND PhD on Sorption of gases with Professor Harry Leck in Liverpool 1962 Momentum accommodation of ions to simulate satellite drag at RAE Farnborough Low energy sputtering to find damage threshold RAE and Salford Secondary Ion and Secondary Neutral Mass Spectrometry for surface analysis Salford Ion-assisted coatings Salford and MMU Coatings and Thin Films

  6. NEEDS OF VACUUM SCIENCE DIVISION ASTeC General vacuum support for accelerator beam lines Requirement of better vacuum and hence interest in Non-Evaporable Getters which are: Coatings and Thin Films

  7. CHALLENGES Most commercial coatings are line-of sight; ASTeC needs coatings inside tubes Benvenuti in CERN has a method to make NEGS but can we improve this? Can the activation temperature be reduced? Can we control film microstructure? What are effects of electron bombardment which occurs in a cyclotron?

  8. VALIZADEH et al JVSTA 28(5) (2010) 1404

  9. Twisted wire Alloy wire

  10. CO pumping capacity as a function of activation temperature

  11. Pressure 10-2 mbar Pressure 2 x 10-3 mbar Ti-Zr-V films on Si at 70 deg C.

  12. Dark field images of TiN films grown at 473K

  13. PUBLICATIONS FROM THE COLLABORATION Malyshev, O.B., Middleman, K, Colligon, J.S. and Valizadeh, R. Activation and measurement of non-evaporable getter films J.Vac.Sci Technol. 14. FROM THE MMU VIEWPOINT THE COLLABORATION HAS BEEN VERY WELCOME AND SUCCESSFUL Interesting work Publications New contacts Appointment of Dr Valizadeh by STFC Hopefully a new programme of study with Dr Militsyn THANK YOU ASTeC
