  1. What Is Table Position In Texas Hold’em Poker?

  2. Overview In a Texas Poker game, your table position plays an important role in determining your actions. your decision to play a hand should always be based on your seating position on the table relative to the dealer button. The strategies to play a hand are different from every position. That’s why it is crucial to know about the seating positions to decide whether to play the hand or fold and wait for the next hand to begin. In a Texas Hold’em poker game, the Dealer button changes position clockwise after every hand. The button decides which player is going to act from which position in a hand. The player at the button makes his move after every other player in all betting rounds after the flop. When you are the last one to act in a hand, you are “in position”.

  3. Early position (EP) You are in early position if you sit left to the dealer button. You will be the one who is going to start the action in betting rounds. If you are sitting immediate left to the button, you must post the small blind (SB) or if you are sitting next to the SB player, you need to post the big blind (BB). If you are sitting next to BB player, you are at under the gun (UTG) position and need to start the betting action.  Players next to him are at UTG+1 and UTG+2 positions.  Early position is considered the least favorable situation to play as you must act before every other player on the table. It makes you unable to have an idea of your opponent’s hand strength before you enter the pot. It is advisable to play only with strong starting hands from this position.

  4. Middle position (MP) If you are sitting left to the early position players, you are in the middle position. It is better than early position, but still not the best as late position players can see your actions and devise a strategy against you. If the early position players fold, the middle position players become early position players. If the late position players fold, they take their position and become late position players. You can play with a wider range of cards than EP players. The best strategy is to play aggressively with premium hands to make maximum players fold their hands.

  5. Late position (LP) If you are among the last few players to act in the betting round, you are in the late position. It is widely regarded as the best position to play on the table as you make your move after players on EP and MP positions in a betting round. You can see every other opponent’s actions and make better decisions than other players with the valuable information you have about their gameplay. From this position, you can experiment with your starting hands based on the level of skills and experience of your opponents.
