  1. PRESENTATION ON EIFL SPONSORED PROJECT IN THE VOLTA REGION (MOBILE LIBRARY INTERNET SERVICE FOR DEVELOPMENT) AT THE ERATA HOTEL ON 15THOCTOBER 2012

  2. GOAL OF PROJECT The goal of the project is to cut the poverty cycle among rural women peasant farmers to enable them keep their children school.

  3. OBJECTIVES • Select and use 200 children from basic schools in five communities (40 children from each community) as agents of change. • Train the 200 children selected in ICT skills and internet literacy. • Train them in information retrieval skills to enable them access, retrieve and use development information and transmit same to their mothers, peers and other community members. • Link beneficiaries up with Agriculture Extension Officers to enable them get updates (information) on agricultural practices for their mothers. • Inculcate the reading habit in children and support them to sustain it to enable them read, understand and explain information retrieved to their illiterate parents and peers. • Introduce them to educational games to help them sustain interest in learning. • Use the Mobile Library Service equipped with the traditional library materials, computers, solar energy to power the computers, and a digital library to achieve the goal.

  4. EXPECTED OUTCOMES • 200 basic school children to acquire skills in ICT, internet literacy and information retrieval from print and electronic sources. • 200 basic school children to cultivate and sustain the reading habit through the use of the traditional library and contents on the digital library. • Beneficiary children to develop love for the learning of Mathematics, Science and the English Language through the use of the educational games they will be introduced to. • A reduction in social vices. • Improved socio-economic life. • Improved agricultural practices. • Improved crop yields. • Reduction in poverty among women peasant farmers. • Improved school retention rate. • Bridging of the digital gap between the beneficiaries and their counterparts in privileged communities.

  5. ACTIONS TAKEN SO FAR • Equipment have been procured: five computers bought and configured . • Solar system installed on Mobile Library Van. • Capacity building for Mobile Library staff in pedagogical skills completed. • Capacity building in ICT first phase completed: Ms Word, Spreadsheet, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet literacy. • Capacity building in ICT second phase ongoing: Introduction to hardware and networking. • Syllabus and timetable designed. • Meetings held with teachers, school children and some parents prior to project launch to sensitize them. • First interim report submitted. • Training workshop for ten teachers and Mobile Library staff held. • Project launched. • Had first encounter with children from two of the target communities.

  6. ACTIONS FOR NEXT MONTH • Continue teaching beneficiaries ICT skills hands-on. • Teaching beneficiaries information retrieval skills. • Further demonstration of skills by beneficiaries.

  7. CHALLENGES • Inadequate computers. • Lack of a projector. • An additional community that has forced itself onto the project.
