  14. Interpretationof data Chart 1 showsthedistributionofthe world’s populationbycontinent. Theverticalaxisshowsthepercentageof world populationandthehorizontalaxiscomparesthesixcontinentslisted, dividedinto a comparisonofthreeyears: 1800, 1900 and 1997. As canbeseenfromthechart, by far thelargestpercentageofthe world’s populationlivedinAsiacomparedwithanyothercontinentin 1800. Infact, Asiaaccounted for as muchas 65% ofthe world’s population. On theotherhand, North America andOceaniatogetheraccounted for only 1% ofthe total.

  16. Interpretation of Data • Natural Change in Population 1950-2007 (SAMPLE ANSWER) The diagram shows the numbers of live births and deaths in the period from 1950 to 2007. The total number of deaths remained close to 50,000 throughout theperiod. Anexception is the period around 1960 whichrecordedparticularlowsofslightlyabove 40,000, but the trend soonrecovered. As concernslive births, the situation is vastly different. In the period of 57 years, the number of live births dropped dramatically from as many as 95,000 in 1950 to slightlyover40,000 in 2007. The decrease has been relativelysteady.
