  1. Let’s Groove: Finding the Funding Process Groove Within Dual Enrollment Sarah Bessenger & Jamie Bird Valdosta State University

  2. Dual Enrollment in Georgia • To enhance high school students’ education by allowing them the chance to fulfill their high school graduation requirements while simultaneously earning college credits. • “Two birds, one stone”

  3. Purpose of Session • GAfutures Online or Paper Funding Application • High school confirms schedules in STARS portal • Postsecondary institution confirms schedules in SURFER portal • Sending paper applications to GSFC • Working with Financial Aid and Bursary Offices

  4. Let’s Get Groovy

  5. Best Practice Tip #1: Know the entirety of the process.

  6. Let’s Begin … • HS Meeting/Eligibility Determined/Advising Appointment/Acceptance/Registration • Schedules sent to students and high school counselors/home study contacts • Two funding routes: • Online Funding Application – students that attend a public or private high school • Paper Funding Application – home study students and students that do not have a SSN

  7. Best Practice Tip #2: Make sure all stakeholders are aware of their roles.

  8. Online Funding Application • Not an actual “application” • Double checking student information is the MOST important part of this step in the process • Trouble area = transposed numbers in SSNs

  9. GAfutures STARS & SURFER • STARS portal – high school counselor • SURFER portal – postsecondary institution • Aligned high school numbers and unique Dual Enrollment numbers • More of a back & forth process between the counselor and institution (approving vs. rejecting courses)

  10. Best Practice Tip #3: Create a system that works for YOU & YOUR INSTITUTION.

  11. Paper Funding Application • First step in the process • This is an actual “application” – completed by both the student and counselor/parent/guardian • The home study student application packet is different from the non-SSN student application packet

  12. Finding YOUR Groove … • Best Practice Tip #1: Know the entirety of the process. • Best Practice Tip #2: Make sure all stakeholders are aware of their roles. • Best Practice Tip #3: Create a system that works for YOU & YOUR INSTITUTION.
