  1. The Rosary

  2. Rosary • from Latinrosarium, meaning "rose garden")or "garland of roses" is a popular and traditional Roman Catholic devotion. • a set of prayer beads and the devotional prayer itself, which combines vocal (or silent) prayer and meditation • consist of repeated sequences of the Lord's Prayer followed by ten prayings of the Hail Mary and a single praying of "Glory Be to the Father"; each of these sequences is known as a decade

  3. The origin of the rosary dates back to the ninth century where Irish monks would recite and chant the 150 Psalms of the Bible as a major part of their worship. • the psalms were very hard to memorize and printed copies of the psalms were not readily available • suggested to the people outside the monastery that they recite a series of 150 "Our Father" prayers in place of the psalms • During the 13th century, Medieval theologians began to interpret the 150 psalms as veiled mysteries about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  4. Psalters were divided into groups of 50 and were referred to as "Rosariums“ • "rosarium" refers to roses and rose gardens, it was used to signify a collection of prayers which could be compared to a bouquet of roses.  • The traditional story of the rosary was that Mary herself appeared to Saint Dominic in the twelfth century. • The rosary is part of the Catholic veneration of Mary, which has been promoted by numerous popes, especially Leo XIII, known as "The Rosary Pope"
