Reasons why youth run away • Having challenges at school/home • Family issues • Parents/adults fighting • Drug use in the home • Don’t feel safe at home • Physical, mental, emotional abuse • Parents/adults are too controlling • Pregnancy • Neglect • i.e. absent parent • Lack of food in the home • Peer pressure • Friends • Boyfriend/girlfriend • Gangs
Statistics • 1 in 3 will be sexually assaulted within the first 48 hours of running away • By the third attempt, he/she is 80 percent more likely to be sexually assaulted • The average age of youth who are sexually exploited is 12-14 years old.
Before running away, please consider this: • If you can, talk to a family member you can trust. • Grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin. • Would you be able to stay with them. • Is there a supportive adult in your life you can talk to? • Teacher • Counselor • Best friends parents • Neighbor • Church family • Mentor • Principal • What would happen if you leave or stay? • What are your other options?
