  1. THE NEXT LEVEL ACADEMY PERSONAL GROOMING

  2. PERSONAL GROOMING Make a good first IMPRESSION. This is the process of making yourself look neat and attractive. It entails the things you do to make yourself and your appearance look pleasant and tidy.

  3. PERSONAL GROOMING According to research by Professor Albert Mehribian at the University of California in Los Angeles, upon meeting someone for the first time we form an opinion of them within the first 30 seconds and the majority of that opinion is shaped by appearance.

  4. PERSONAL GROOMING Dress how you want to be addressed. Your appearance is important not only in making the right first impression but in building long-term relations that rely upon mutual respect and understanding.

  5. IMPORTANCE OF GROOMING Personal grooming is essential in the workplace, as it contributes to a professional and polished appearance. It reflects self-discipline, attention to detail, and respect for others. Proper grooming enhances self-confidence and creates a positive impression, which can impact career opportunities and professional relationships.

  6. YOUR APPEARANCE IS WHAT PEOPLE USE TO MEASURE; • Your professionalism • Your level of sophistication • Your intelligence • Your credibility

  7. PERSONAL GROOMING HABITS Overall cleanliness Hair Teeth Accessories Make-Up Nails Scent Grooming involves all the aspects of your body Uniform

  8. HAIR IS A PERSON’S CROWNING GLORY. KEEP IT CLEAN AND TIDY ALWAYS.

  9. HAIR Ladys’ Wash hair regularly and keep it at a length and style you can maintain. Hair should not fall over the ears, eyebrows or even touch the back of the collar. Tie hair in a neat hairstyle with hair pulled back from the face. Avoid dramatic and severe hair styles that can be distracting and project an unprofessional image.

  10. HAIR Hair holding devices should be plain and of natural colour. Hair colour should not be more than one or two shades darker or lighter than our natural hair colour. Unnatural colours (burgundy, green, yellow etc) should be avoided.

  11. HAIR Gentleman Facial hair should be neat, sideburns and beards are not recommended. Body hair should be trimmed so that it does not appear above your collar or below your sleeves. If you wear an open collar shirt, chest hair should be groomed so that it does not stick out.

  12. MAKEUP Make-up should be kept at a minimum, light and subtle. It should be natural looking. Lip colour should not be too trendy and bright. Ladies stay away from extremely dark, bright reds and fluorescent colours.

  13. Nails Nails should be kept short and clean all the time. Short nails make less trouble. Nail polish or nail vanishes and artificial nails are not allowed. Don’t grow nails to a length that is distracting. You handle food, long nails breed bacteria!

  14. THINGS TO AVOID TEETH Always maintain fresh breath. Brush teeth twice a day and rinse well after every meal. For those who smoke, it’s important that you rinse your mouth after every smoke and use a mouth freshener. Avoid foods with a strong odour like onions and garlic. Avoid looking like a cow – never chew gum in the workplace.

  15. Your name badges are also an important part of the uniform and should be worn always. UNIFORM Your uniform talks a lot about your organisation. A clean neat and well ironed uniform should be worn at all times.

  16. ACCESSORIES Jewellery should also be kept at a minimum. Only earring studs can be worn. Do not wear dangling earrings or multiple earrings. Leave the nose ring, eyebrow rings, lip rings and other piercings at home. Avoid bracelets and necklaces.

  17. ALWAYS keep your under arms clean and shaved. SCENT Always use deodorant and a strong antiperspirant. There is a difference between these two. Antiperspirant keeps you from sweating while deodorant cuts down on what makes you stink when you do sweat.

  18. SCENT Deodorant is typically used on the underarms and nowhere else, to cover up the odour that comes from there. Even better is antiperspirant as it keeps underarms dry and there is no moisture to generate odour. The rest of the products such as perfume and body spray are not needed. They only make you smell “extra nice”

  19. SCENT If you perspire heavily, keep an extra blouse or shirt so you can freshen up as needed. Avoid over scenting with cologne or perfume, especially to mask body odours. Over scenting can just be as offensive as unpleasant body odour.

  20. LET’S REMEMBER ! A neat and clean uniform at all times. Hair neatly tied up. No bad breath. Well manicured hands. Use antiperspirant and deodorant always.

  21. AVOID Picking your teeth, nose and ears Sneezing or yawning without closing your mouth Belching loudly Continuously rearranging your hair or clothes

  22. FITTED TOO BIG IMAGE IS EVERYTHING ELEGANT SUIT TOO WIDE Once you have taken care of your personal hygiene, it’s important that you exude confidence in everything you do. Your image is your reputation. It reflects through your dress, posture, conversation and the way you carry yourself. It should be in sync with the company’s corporate culture. MESSY A FEW FOLDS (ESPECIALLY WHEN RESTING) MORE DROOPY FITS PERFECTLY CREASES MAKE SILHOUETTE LESS ELEGANT

  23. POSTURE Shoulders drooping Head down Frown Low energy Not ready I’m no good! No l can’t! MY JOB IS ROTTEN! Shoulders back Head up Smile Full of energy Ready to perform I am great! Yes l can! MY JOB IS GREAT! Maintain a positive and confident posture always

  24. HOW YOU STAND MATTERS Keep your hands open and relaxed. Do not stick them in your pockets. Do not lean onto the counter or rest your legs on objects. Stand up as TALL as you can, like you’re a puppet and somebody just pulled the string that’s attached to the top of your noggin. Pull your shoulder blades down and back as far as possible. Pick your chin up and look straight ahead – stop looking down while walking around, there’s a whole world out there for you to see

  25. Which one is GENUINE? Which one is NOT? SMILE People don’t smile enough these days, so we’re bringing it back. When dealing with any situation or scenario where you’re uncomfortable, it’s easy to get caught up in your head, which means you probably have a stupidly sad look on your face. To avoid that, just smile! Not a fake smile, not a creepy smile, but a genuine smile.

  26. WALK WITH CONFIDENCE Walking with confidence is a great way to create a great first impression or simply demonstrate your confidence to the world without saying a word. SIX WAYS TO WALK WITH CONFIDENCE • Smile as you walk • Stand up straight • Walk briskly • Lengthen your stride • Keep your arms on your side • Don’t walk closely behind someone

  27. SMILE AS YOU WALK AND KEEP SMILING Smiling projects your confidence and makes you seem approachable as well. You don’t need to sport a huge grin, just a subtle smile will do. Try not to force your smile. Instead, showcase your natural smile as you walk.

  28. STAND UP STRAIGHT A hunched appearance projects a lack of confidence. Instead, walk straight and tall to seem confident. As you walk, keep your shoulders back and lift up your chin slightly.

  29. WALK BRISKLY A brisk walk projects confidence, while walking slowly makes you seem preoccupied with your own thoughts. To seem more confident when you walk, adopt a brisk pace. Try practicing walking to the beat of a favourite quick paced song to help you develop your brisk walk.

  30. LENGTHEN YOUR STRIDE Walking silently makes you seem meek or afraid, so don’t tiptoe or walk silently. A bit of noise is good when you want to walk confidently. It demonstrates that you want to be seen because you are confident in your appearance

  31. KEEP YOUR ARMS AT YOUR SIDES Crossing your arms while you walk makes you seem vulnerable, so don’t cross your arms. Allow your arms to fall loosely at your sides and move them back and forth slightly as you walk.

  32. DON’T WALK CLOSELY BEHIND SOMEONE Walking right behind someone that you came with can send the message that you are weaker than that person and that you require protection. If you will be walking with someone, make sure that you are in front of the person or at least side-by side
