  2. DIFFERENT TYPES OF HIGH SCHOOLS IN CHICAGO • Selective Enrollment High Schools (SEHS) • International Baccalaureate High Schools (IB) • Magnet High Schools & Programs • Charter High Schools • College and Career Academies • Military Academies • Parochial Schools • Neighborhood Schools

SELECTIVE ENROLLMENT HIGH SCHOOLS • What do they look at? • 7th grade grades • 7th grade ISAT scores • Students must have a minimum stanine of 5 in reading comprehension and a minimum stanine of 5 in math. • Students with an IEP/504 Plan must have stanines that add up to at least 10 (Example: 7 in reading and 3 in math). • Selective Enrollment Exam Scores • Exam is approximately three hours long • Exam covers four subject areas: reading comprehension, vocabulary, language arts (grammar), and math word problems. • Calculators are not allowed (unless stated in student’s IEP) • What are your choices?

Selective Enrollment High SchoolsHow To Apply One application per student Apply up to six schools Students must rank their 1st, 2nd, 3rd choice and so on Two ways to apply: Online at www.apply.cps.edu Must apply for a PIN first. This is used to sign in when using online applications. Will be mailed to your house within 3-5 days. Can apply for a PIN starting October 1st, 2012. Submit a paper application to OAE (Office of Access and Enrollment)

Selective Enrollment High SchoolsSelection Process Selection is based on a 900-point scale: 7th Grade ISAT Scores (300 Points) 7th Grade Grades (300 Points) Selective Enrollment Exam (300 Points) SEHS offer NO sibling preference, NO consideration for proximity and have NO waiting lists. First 30% of seats at each school are filled by rank score ONLY (highest out of 900 points). Remaining seats are divided equally among four tiers. Tiers are based on your home address. The top-scoring students in each tier are selected. After students are selected, a pool of applicants remains, ranked by score. Students who decline offers, or who have not received an offer still remain in the applicant pool. If schools have seats remaining, it is possible for a student in the applicant pool to receive an offer in the second or third round. Principal Discretion Takes place in March, after the first round of selections A student does NOT have to decline an offer from another SEHS to be consider for principal discretion.

  6. International Baccalaureate High Schools What are IB Schools? Grades 9-10 focus on world language, English, mathematics, humanities, sciences, art, physical education and technology. Grades 11-12 offers courses for the IB Diploma, a prestigious secondary school credential recognized by universities worldwide. What do they look at? 7th grade grades 7th grade ISAT scores Must have a minimum stanine of 5 in reading and a minimum stanine of 5 in math Students with IEP/504 plans must have stanines that add up to 10 What are my options? IB HIGH SCHOOLS APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS • One application per student • Can apply up to six schools/programs • Apply online: www.apply.cps.edu or turn in a paper application to OAE • An interview may be requested. If it is, a letter will be mailed to your home. • Students are selected based on overall applicant score. Points are given based on: • 7th grade grades & ISAT scores • Interview (if required) • Proximity to the school

MAGNET PROGRAMS • What are Magnet Programs? • Offer specialty programs in areas including fine and performing arts, engineering and agricultural sciences • What do they look at? • 7th grade grades • 7th grade ISAT scores • Students must have a minimum stanine of 5 in reading comprehension and a minimum stanine of 5 in math • Students with an IEP/504 plan must have stanines that add up to 10 • Letters of Recommendations • Essay • What are your options? • Von Steuben Science Program • In addition to stanines of 5 in math & reading, you also need a stanine of 5 in science • Von Steuben Scholars Program • Requires a stanine of 7 in reading, math and science • Prosser High School • Curie Fine Arts • Chicago HS for Agricultural Sciences • In addition to stanines of 5 in math & reading, you also need a stanine of 5 in science • Plus many more!

MAGNET PROGRAMS APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS • One application per student • Apply to up to seven schools/programs • Apply online at: www.apply.cps.edu or submit a paper application to OAE • For most magnet high schools and programs, students are selected through a computerized lottery. • Siblings are accepted first • Exceptions for SENN (selected through audition/portfolio) and Von Steuben Scholars (selected based on test scores, teacher recommendations and essay. • Selection process takes into account your tier • After all seats are filled, non-selected students are placed on to a waitlist • As offers to selected students are declined, the seats are filled from the waitlists, according to category

  10. College and Career Academies What are College and Career Academies? Prepare students for college and career success by offering hands on training in various industries. May give students opportunities to earn college credit and participate in job shadows/internships. What do they look at? 7th Grade Grades 7th Grade ISAT Scores Some academies do NOT have minimum eligibility requirements. What are my options? Automotive Education Information Technology Business Architecture Culinary Cosmetology

COLLEGE AND CAREER ACADEMIES APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS • One application per student • Apply to up to five academies • Apply online at www.apply.cps.edu or submit a paper application to OAE • Most academies select students through a computerized lottery, with preference given to students with minimum stanines of 5 in reading and math (or stanines that equal 10, for students with an IEP/504 plan). • “Selective” academies (law, medical, IT) select students based on points from 7th grade grades, 7th grade ISAT scores, statement of interest, teacher recommendation and interview

MILITARY ACADEMIES • What are Military Academies? • Offer rigorous and relevant college preparatory curriculum • Each academy focuses on a different branch of military • What do they look at? • 7th Grade Grades • 7th Grade ISAT Scores (Students stanines in reading and math must equal 10. Example: 7 in reading, 3 in math) • Students must participate in an interview • What are my choices? • Air Force • Carver • Chicago Military Academy (Bronzeville) • Marine • Phoenix • Rickover

MILITARY ACADEMIES APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS • One application per student • Can apply to up to four schools • Apply online at: www.apply.cps.edu or submit paper application to OAE • Students are selected based on the results from their interview, 7th grade grades and ISAT scores • Non-selected students will remain in an applicant pool, ranked by score. • NO sibling preference

  14. CHARTER SCHOOLS What are Charter Schools? Charter schools are free public schools that are independently operated. There are no admissions tests or tuition and are open to all students. What do they look at? Mostly lottery schools Do NOT look at ISAT scores or grades What are your options?   15. CHARTER SCHOOLS APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS • How to apply is dependent on the school itself. Many charter schools require the student to be present to receive an application to apply. • Charter schools do NOT look at grades or ISAT scores. • Students are usually selected based on a lottery system.
