  4. Plot • A plot is the sequence of events in a story. The plot is the writer’s plan for what happens, when it happens, and to whom it happens. A plot is usually built around a conflict.(problem)

  5. Exposition • The exposition sets the stage for a story. Characters are introduced, and the setting is described.

  6. Rising Action • The rising action occurs next. The plot “thickens” as the conflict begins to unfold. Complications are introduced and suspense builds.

  7. Climax • The climax is the point of general interest or suspense in the story. It is the turning point, when the action reaches a peak and the outcome of the conflict is decided.

  8. Falling Action(sometimes called resolution) • The falling action occurs after the climax and resolves the conflict. The loose ends are tied up and the story comes to a close.

  9. Denouement • The denouement is the final outcome of the story.

  10. Setting • A story setting is the time and place in which the action of the story happens. The setting of a story, poem, or play is the time and place of the action. Sometimes the setting is clear and well-defined; at other times, it is left to the reader’s imagination.

  11. Characters • A character is the people, animals, or imaginary creatures that take part in the action of a story (main character, minor character, dynamic character, and static characters).

  12. Main Characters: • Usually a short story centers on events in the life of the main character.

  13. Minor Character: • Minor characters interact with the main character and with one another.

  14. Dynamic Characters: • Dynamic characters change as a result of events.

  15. Static Characters: • Static characters remain the same.

  19. Behavior • The behavior tells how the characters behave throughout the story.

  20. Dialogue • Dialogue is when there is conversation between two or more people or characters.
