  2. BY THE MID 1700’S THE MAJOR POWERS OF EUROPE- ENGLAND, FRANCE, SPAIN AND THE NETHERLANDS WERE LOCKED IN A STRUGGLE FOR EMPIRE. THEY COMPETED FOR LAND AND RESOURCES.

  3. FRANCE THREATENED THE ENGLISH COLONIES IN NORTH AMERICA. • THE FRENCH CONTROLLED A VAST AREA TILL THE GULF OF MEXICO AND PROTECTED IT WITH FORTS

  4. AS THE COLONIAL POP GREW, COLONISTS STARTED MOVING TOWARDS THE FRENCH LANDS • THEY COMPETED OVER THE FUR TRADE AND THIS MADE THE FRENCH WANT TO HALT COLONIAL EXPANSION

  5. NATIVE AMERICANS HAD TO CHOOSE SIDES BETWEEN THE ENGLISH OR THE FRENCH • IN GENERAL, THE FRENCH TREATED NATIVE AMERICANS BETTER. THEY DIDN’T TAKETHIER LAND AND THEY INTERMARRIED WITH THEM.

  6. THE FRENCH BUILT STRONG ALLIANCES WITH THE ALGONQUINS AND THE HURONS • THE BRITISH HAD THE IROQUOIS SIDE WITH THEM • THE IROQUOIS WERE ENEMIES OF THE ALGONQUIN AND HURON

  10. A STRING OF BRITISH DEFEATS • MEANWHILE THE WAR CONTINUED AND THE BRITISH AGAIN FAILED TO CAPTURE FORT DUQUESNE • THEY ALSO LOST THE BATTLES OF FORT OSWEGO AND FORT WILLIAM HENRY.

  11. IN 1757, WILLIAM PITT TOOK OVER THE BRITISH GOVT. • HE MADE IT A PRIORITY TO WIN THE WAR IN NORTH AMERICA • UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP, THE TIDE OF BATTLE TURNED • THE COLONISTS WON VICS IN NA

  12. THEY CAPTURED LOUISBOURG • THEY CAPTURED FORT DUQUESNE AND RENAMED IT PITTSBURGH • PITT THEN SENT WOLFE TO CAPTURE QUEBEC, THE FRENCH CAPITAL

  13. WOLFE AND MONTCALM FOUGHT THE BATTLE OF QUEBEC • BOTH DIED, BUT VICTORY WENT TO THE COLONISTS • QUEBEC SURRENDERED TO THE BRITISH • IN 1763- THEY SIGNED THE TREATY OF PARIS

  14. TERMS • END OF FRENCH POWER IN NA • BRITAIN GAINED CANADA AND ALL FRENCH LANDS EAST OF THE MISS • EXCEPT NEW ORLEANS • FRANCE COULD KEEP SOME OF ITS ISLANDS • SPAIN GAVE FLORIDA TO BRITIAN • IN RETURN, SPAIN RECEIVED FRENCH LAND WEST OF MISS • SPAIN ALSO GAINED NEW ORLEANS
