  3. Example • Camels live in many places around the world. There are two kinds of camels. The Bactrian camel has two humps, while thedromedarycamel has just one. If you count 19 animals with a total of 27 humps, how many camels of each type did you see?? • 1) Summary: Bactrian has 2humps, Dromedary has 1hump. There are 19 camels and 27hump

There are 19 camels and 27hump • Step 3(Solve): • Guess: 10 Bactrian 9 Dromedary (Total 19) • Check: 10 x 2=20 humps 9 x 1 = 9 humps • Guess: 7 Bactrian 12 Dromedary (Total 19) • Check: 7 x 2=14 humps 12 x 1 = 12 humps • Guess: 8 Bactrian 11 Dromedary (Total 19) • Check: 8 x 2=16 humps 11 x 1 = 11 humps 20 +9=29 This answer is too high compared to 27 So, Try fewer Bactrian camels 14 +12=26 This answer is low compared to 27 So, Try more dromedary camels 16 +11=27 humps So this is the Correct answer!! 8 Bactrian & 11 dromedary

  6. Practice • 1) Science: The Bactrian camel has 2 humps and the dromedary camel has 1 hump. In a group of 15 camels, the total number of humps is 21. How many camels of each type are there???

There are 15 camels and 21humps • Guess: 10 Bactrian 5 Dromedary (Total 15) • Check: 10 x 2=20 humps 5 x 1 = 5 humps • Guess: 8 Bactrian 7 Dromedary (Total 15) • Check: 8 x 2=16 humps 7 x 1 = 7 humps • Guess: 6 Bactrian 9 Dromedary (Total 15) • Check: 6 x 2=12 humps 9 x 1 = 9 humps 20 +5=25 too high compared to 21 So, Try fewer Bactrian camels 16 +7=23 too high compared to 21 So, Try fewer Bactrian camels 12 +9=21 Correct answer!! 6 Bactrian, 9 dromedary

  8. Practice • 2) The circus orders bicycles and unicycles for a new act. It orders a total of 12 cycles. The cycles have 16 tires all together. How many bicycles and unicycles did the circus order?? • Summary: Total cycles are 12. 16 tires all together. • Hint Bicycle has 2 tires, Unicycles has 1 tire

Total tires 16 • Guess: 6 Bicycles, 6 Unicycles (Total 12) • Check 6x2=12 • 6x1=6 • Guess:5 Bicycles. 7 Unicycles (Total 12) • Check: 5 x 2=10 • 7 x 1=7 • Guess:4 Bicycles. 8 Unicycles (Total 12) • Check: 4 x 2=8 • 8 x 1=8 12+6=18 is too high compared to 16 tires So, try less Bicycles 10+7=17 is too high compared to 16 So, try less bicycles 8+8=16 Correct answer!! 4 bicycles & 8 unicycles
