  1. HOW TO PLAY THIS GAME! HORNET BASEBALL

  2. WHAT MAKES A TEAM! • Selfless Selfish • Anticipate Presume • Responsibility Prideful • Challenge Problem

  3. THE BIG INNING! • 3 runs or more is a BIG INNING! • In a BIG INNING, a pitcher pitches an average of 27 pitches.

  4. INGREDIENTS FOR A BIG INNING • Base on Balls • Error • Hit by Pitch • Defense: Cannot allow any of these! • Offense: Want to create one of these! • One of these 3 happen 87% of the time!

  5. HOW TO STOP A BIG INNING! • Pitchers: 1. Control the Strike Zone! Know the ump’s zone! • 2. You are responsible for all 17 inches of the plate. Find a spot they cannot hit! • 3. Force Bad Swings! Locate pitches, deception, and movement.

  6. HOW TO STOP A BIG INNING! • Pitchers: 4. What is your plan for each hitter? • 5. Make hitters account for 2 or more pitches. If they are only looking for 1 pitch, you are in trouble. • 6. Have a pitch that will make a hitter swing and miss.

  7. HOW TO STOP A BIG INNING! • Pitchers: 7. Attack the running game. ( work on your best pick- off moves). • 8. Control the tempo of the game. • 9. Be able to pitch inside! ( away, away, in).

  8. HOW TO STOP A BIG INNING! • The rest of the field: • 1. Anticipate the next play. • 2. NO ERRORS! • 3. Each play is a Challenge! • 4. Dominate the Average Play!

  9. HOW TO CREATE A BIG INNING! • Hitters: 1. You are not responsible for all 17 inches of the plate. (except with 2 strikes). • 2. Pressure and Plate Discipline causes ERRORS! • 3. Run your best time to 1st Base. • 4. Strike out are Killers. • 5. Put the barrel on the ball!

  10. KEY THINGS TO HELP YOU DOMINATE THE GAME! • Velocity is the hitters friend but movement is the enemy! • Pitchers pitch on a certain rhythm. Hitters and baserunners take them out of their rhythm. • Pitchers are affected by size, stats, and place in batting order of hitter. • Pitchers should pitch their best against the 7,8,9 hole hitters.

  11. KEY THINGS TO HELP YOU WIN! • If a pitcher has pitched 20 or more pitches in an inning, the hitters have figured them out. • Good pitchers pitch 9 pitches. • Good baserunners get into pitchers heads. Fake a break and bump, bump, back. • When a Pitcher comes in from the pen, he is coming in to throw a strike. Load up and maybe hit the 1st pitch!

  12. JAR OF MARBLES

  13. JAR OF MARBLES • Pitchers are like a Jar of Marbles. The longer you let people look at it, the better their guess is going to be. • Pitchers: Don’t stay out on the mound long enough to let hitters figure you out! • Hitters: Study the pitcher. Get into his head and show him that he has been dominated. Make him throw 20 pitches in an inning.

  14. WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU! • Go all out in Practice! Make yourself better! • Pitchers: Don’t let hitters and baserunners figure you out! • Hitters: Figure out the pitcher! • Be the one guy who creates pressure on the other team. BLOW IT UP! • Celebrate all Victories! ( strike-outs, getting an out, getting a hit, double, triple, HR!)

  15. WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU! • Finish all Plays! • Do not draw attention toward yourself! Be SELFLESS than SELFISH! • Pitchers: Pitch a game with no more than 15 pitches an inning. Less than 10 is Great! • Hitters: Create pressure on the other team. Put the barrel of the bat where the ball is! • Keep within the doorframe and concentrate hitting the ball up the middle!

  16. Inter-Squad 20 Pitch Game • Each Pitcher has only got 20 pitches to throw in an inning. • If there are runners on base on the 20th pitch and all three outs have not been made, the runners on base count for the team on offense. • If a Pitcher throws 11-15 pitches, then the defense gets 1 run taken away from the other team. • If a Pitcher throws 10 or less pitches, then they get 2 runs taken away.
