  1. The German POPs inventory A short description Improvements Challenges & open questions Kristina Juhrich Federal Environment Agency

  2. Annual Dioxin/ Furan emissions

  3. Completeness • Dioxin/ Furan emission inventory is nearly complete • Measurement data are available for several years • Data quality is satisfactory But: • large uncertainties regarding the (illegal) waste wood consumption in small combustion plants • Breaks in time series due to incomplete measurement data • Possible gap: 6.C.e Small scale waste burning

  4. Annual PAH emissions

  5. Which PAHs were measured ?

  6. Annual HCB emissions

  7. Improvements and open questions New: • HCB measurements from waste incineration plants and copper production Still missing: • Pesticide use: 1.4- 5.6 kg But no activity data from 1990 available • Smoke munitions: 380 kg in 2010 / 1,500 kg in 2003 ?! But the values seem to be remarkable high and no activity data from 1990 are available • Chemical industry ? • Steel industry ? • Cement production ?

  8. Annual PCB emissions

  9. challenges Different PCB measurements: • Ballschmiter value (PCB 28, 52, 101, 138, 153, 180 )* 5 • WHO 2005 (77, 81, 126, 169, 105, 114, 118, 123, 156, 157, 167, 189) TEQ Need to be checked: • PCB emissions from lead and zinc production (values and trend) Still missing: • PCB emissions from electrical equipment (capacitors and transformers)

  10. Immission monitoring data (Hesse)

  11. Seasonal immission trend (Erfurt)

  12. Further steps • Inform the experts about the importance of the POPs inventory • Review the inventory to check the existing emission factors and to identify missing source categories • Evaluation of monitoring data to get information of the expected trend, possible gaps and key sources • Contact the industry for data • Measurement projects depending on financial resources • Information exchange with the informal network of POPs inventory compilers, which is established by Rob Whiting

  13. Thank you very much for your attention!
