  1. Phylum Mollusca, Arthropoda, and Echinodermata By: Megan Althouse Joanna Culp Chloe’ Kuehn

  2. Characteristics of Mollusca • Found in salt water, fresh water, and on land • Many are used by humans for food • Three major classes – Bivalvia, Gastropoda, and Cephalopada • Bilaterally Symmetrical • Open circulatory system

  3. Important Facts • Different in movement – example, snails slide and octopuses use jet propulsion • Known as the “clean up creatures” • Herbivores, Carnivores, Filter Feeders • 50,000 known species • Most are marine

  4. Examples • Oysters • Clams • Snails • Squids • Chiton • Octopuses

  5. Characteristics of Arthropods • Segmented body • Tough exoskeleton (like a suit of armor) • Jointed appendages (legs, antennae) • Bodies are divided into segments • Can be Herbivores, Carnivores, or Omnivores • They can be blood suckers, filter feeders, detritivores, and parasites • They have little legs • Dorsal • Ventral nervous system ( the main nervous system is below the digestive system

  6. Important Facts • Since evolution arthropods have fewer body segments and highly specialized appendages • They are herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores, also filter feeders and bloodsuckers • They go through molting

  7. Examples • Bees • Beetles • Mosquitoes • Butterflies • Peripatus • Spiders • Ants

  8. Characteristics of Echinoderms • Some stay in one place, while others move around • Have internal skeletons • Hard, calcified plates • They have spiny projections on plates that stick through the skin

  9. Important Facts • Have a water vascular system • They do not have a head • They always have five arms or multiple of five up to fifty • Some have a jaw like structure while other use tube feet to get food

  10. Examples • Starfish • Sea Urchins • Sea Cucumbers • Sand Dollars
