Mean, median, mode, range • Mean: the average of a set of data. • Add all numbers in the data set & divide by the total # • Median: The middle # of the data set. • Order all the numbers from least to greatest. Find the middle #. • If there are two middle numbers, find the average of the two middle numbers. • Mode: The # that occurs the most often in a data set. • Range: the difference between the smallest & largest # in the data set.
find the mean, median, mode, & range 9, 5, 8, 5, 9, 8, 4, 8, 7 Mean = 7 Median = 8 Mode = 8 Range = 5
Box & whisker plots A graph that displays the highest & lowest quarters of data as whiskers, the middle two quarters of the data as a box, & the median. Quartiles: Each quarter of the graph which represents ¼ or 25% of the data.
To draw a box & whisker plot • Order numbers in the data set from least to greatest • Find the median of the entire data set • The median of the entire data set is called the 2nd quartile in a box & whisker plot • Find the median of the lower half of the data set • The median of the lower half of the data set is called the 1st quartile • Find the median of the upper half of the data set • The median of the upper half of the data set is called the 3rd quartile • Draw a box connecting the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd quartiles • Draw whiskers from the box to the lowest & highest numbers in the data set.
