Shaken Baby Syndrome Shaken baby/shaken impact syndrome (SBS) is a form of inflicted head trauma. Unlike other forms of inflicted head trauma, SBS results from injuries caused by someone vigorously shaking an infant.
What Happens Physically? • When someone forcefully shakes a baby, the child's head rotates about uncontrollably because infants' neck muscles aren't well developed and provide little support for their heads. • The violent movement pitches the infant's brain back and forth within the skull, rupturing blood vessels and nerves throughout the brain and tearing the brain tissue. • The brain strikes the inside of the skull, causing bruising and bleeding to the brain.
Children who survive may have: • partial or total blindness • hearing loss • seizures • developmental delays • impaired intellect • speech and learning difficulties • problems with memory and attention • severe mental retardation • paralysis (some particularly traumatic episodes leave children in a coma)
The vast majority of incidents occur in infants who are younger than 1 year old. • It is almost always parents or caregivers, who shake the baby out of frustration or stress when the little one is crying inconsolably. • Normally a person doesn’t mean to do this but they can’t handle all the stressors.
TRICKS OF THE TRADE!! • Check to make sure the baby does not have a fever. • Take the baby to someone else’s house. • Take a break (Place the baby in the crib on his/her back, close the door and check on them in 10 minutes.) • Rock or walk the baby. • Turn on the vacuum. • Use background noise (teddy bear). • Take the baby for a drive. • Hold them and rub their back while on their tummy.
MORE TRICKS OF THE TRADE! • Sing to them. • Sucking on a Pacifier or finger. • Blanket/Pillow. • Take them for a walk in the stroller. • Background Music. • Swing. • Bouncy Seat. • Car Seat on Top of the Dryer.
