  1. Machine Name: Shania gumbs Grade: 6 Teacher : Keith Olliverre Subject: Science

  2. Machine An apparatus using or applying mechanical power to perform a particular task.

  3. Types of machines By means of a machine an applied force is increased, its direction is changed, or one form of motion or energy is changed into another form. Thus defined, such simple devices as the lever, the pulley, the inclined plane, the screw, and the wheel and axle are machines. They are called simple machines; more complicated machines are merely combinations of them. Of the five, the lever, the pulley, and the inclined plane are primary; the wheel and axle and the screw are secondary. The wheel and axle combination is a rotary lever, while the screw may be considered an inclined plane wound around a core. The wedge is a double inclined plane. Complex machines are designated, as a rule, by the operations they perform; the complicated devices used for sawing, planing, and turning, for example, are known as sawing machines, planing machines, and turning machines respectively and as machine tools collectively. Machines used to transform other forms of energy (as heat) into mechanical energy are known as engines, i.e. the steam engine or the internal-combustion engine. The electric motor transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy. Its operation is the reverse of that of the electric generator, which transforms the energy of falling water or steam into electrical energy. 4. Pulley Pulleys are extremely useful for lifting objects. Most machines used for lifting, such as cranes, have sets of pulleys that magnify the effort. We will use the words effort to mean the force needed or applied and load to mean the weight that needs to be lifted. The more pulleys that are used the less effort required to lift the load and the slower the load is lifted off the ground.

  6. Load A heavy or bulky thing that is being carried or is about to be carried.

  8. Fulcrum A fulcrum, or pivot point, is the area around which a lever turns. A lever is a hard length of material -- or a bar -- used to put out force or maintain weight at one end, while pressure is exerted on its second end. In other words, when force is placed on one end of a bar or handle, which turns on the third point, or fulcrum, force or weight is managed on the second point of the lever.

  10. Effort Effort -an exertion of strength or power, whether physical or mental,in performing an act or aiming at an object;more or less strengths endeavour struggle directed to.
