  1. AP Enrollment Expectations & Summer Work AP Teachers Expectations Time Management AP Test Information Brief Introductions June 21, 2013

  2. AP Class Information & Benefits • 344 exams were taken this year at Mather • Students are exposed to college level material, rigor, and will use skills to manage demanding classes with a support network of teachers • According to Mattern, Shaw, & Ewing (2011) results of their study revealed a positive relationship between AP participation and majoring in a related field in college. For example, there was a strong link between taking an AP Exam in computer science and majoring in computer sciences in college. Additionally, students’ AP scores in that content area were also related to their likelihood of majoring in that subject area. Results showed that students who took no AP Exams were more likely to not declare a major field of study.

  3. AP Class Information & Benefits • Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) courses are college-level courses offered in high school. AP courses reflect what is taught in top introductory college courses. • At the end of course, students take AP Exams—standardized exams that measure how well students have mastered college-level course work. • Exams usually last around three hours. • Each AP Exam contains: • Multiple-choice questions • Free-response questions (essay, problem-solving, oral response) • Students who do well on AP Exams can earn credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college.

  4. Expectations • The Student agrees to organize his/her time and effort to successfully complete the AP course in which he/she is enrolled. The student will notify teachers immediately if he/she falls behind in class readings and/or assignments. The student will be expected to complete assignments, readings, and projects outside of class time. The student will take the AP Exam on its scheduled date and time as outlined by the College Board.

  5. Expectations • The Parent/Guardian agrees to be familiar with and accept the AP course requirements and policies, and to help his/her child organize study time in support of class assignments. The parent/guardian agrees to purchase required materials and to pay the exam fee as determined by the AP Coordinator. If the parent/guardian is unable to meet these requirements for financial reasons, they will contact the AP Coordinator immediately.

  6. Expectations • The School (AP Teacher and AP Coordinator) agrees to provide rigorous instruction and challenging course content as described in the AP Course Description. The school will provide the student with a copy of the Bulletin for AP Students and Parents and agrees to administer the AP Exam in a fair and secure environment as outlined in the AP Coordinator’s Manual.

  7. Expectations for successful studying while enrolled in an AP class • Utilize a quiet place to study • Internet may be required for submission of papers, voice thread assignments, and research • Many hours of homework and studying are required, especially in March and April • Afternoon/Saturday review sessions with teachers

  8. AP Test Information • Between the dates of May 5-16, 2014 you will be taking the AP exam(s), which is a requirement for all AP classes at Mather High School. Please be aware of Mather’s rules and regulations for AP testing: • All AP students must take the corresponding AP exam. • If a student fails to show for an AP exam, a fee is added to the student’s debt, the class grade may be reduced, and AP credit may be removed from the student’s grade point average. • The fee for AP exams is $25 each. All students must pay in the school store in the spring of 2014. Mather High School agrees to cover a portion of the $89 exam cost.

  9. AP Test Information • Each AP Exam scores is a weighted combination of the student’s scores on the multiple-choice section and on the free-response section. The final score is reported on a 5-point scale: • 5=extremely well qualified • 4=well qualified • 3=qualified • 2=possibly qualified • 1=no recommendation • Source: AP College Board

  10. AP Test Information • AP Grade Reports are sent in July to students, high schools, and colleges designated by individual students. • High school principals receive a special AP Grade Report in August for all classes in which five or more students completed the AP Examination. • Source: AP College Board
